Many think that to losing weight has the same old formula of combining 3 S's: self-control, sweat and starvation. But recent research shows that losing weight and staying fit can also be achieved without torturing ourselves. Here are what the experts say on losing weight the relax way.

Studies show that intense and fast cardio is more effective for losing weight and staying fit than a slower, more moderate exercise routine. A health study in 2009 found that a 30-minute exercise of intense cardio for five days a week burns more visceral fat compared to a 50-minute, moderately paced exercise session even though both burn the same amount of calories. Why do you need to prolong your exercise if you can cut it in half by just changing the intensity and still achieve your health goals of staying fit? Weight lifting or other resistance training is another good way for staying fit and health research even show that it may be more effective compared to aerobic exercise for some people.

And after the exercise activities, here comes rest and nourishment. Who knew that alcohol, dairy and eating carbs are good for our health and can help us lose the pounds?

Having enough sleep is vital in losing weight and staying fit because it regulates ghrelin (appetite hormone) and leptin (satiety hormone) in the body. Research shows that light sleepers are 27 percent more likely to develop obesity than those that get regular amount of sleep.

With regard to food and nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health researchers says that women, regardless of type, who consumes one to two servings of alcohol (i.e. wine, beer, cocktails) gained less weight and were less likely to get overweight compared to those refraining from drinking. The result may be due to the fact that most women tend to decrease other parts of their diet when they drink and that the female body breaks down alcohol inefficiently which uses a little more calories, according to Lu Wang, MD, PhD, lead research and instructor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The study appears not to apply to men as guys tend to eat the same, and sometimes more, when they drink.

Eating the right carbs and having at least 3 servings of dairy can also help for losing weight and staying fit. A health study in the International Journal of Obesity found that people in a reduced-calorie diet and ate three cups of yogurt a day for 12-weeks lost more weight than those who cut calories and took calcium pills. Health experts say that calcium and other components in milk and yogurt interrupts the natural production of cortisol by fat cells which in turn reduce the drive to store more fat in the belly. Conjugated linoleic acid, a compound that helps to lose weight, can also be found in dairy products.

Consuming the right carbs can help in staying fit as a 2009 study in the Journal of Nutrition found that people who eat more brown rice, dark bread, popcorn and other whole grains and cereal have less body fat than those who eat less of the stuff. Also, eating more whole grains make most people cut back on other foods because they are loaded up in fiber making you feel fuller and takes longer to digest without adding more calories.
