There are a number of simple and effective ways to keep your home kitchen and your workplace kitchen hygienically clean and safe when it comes to food. Here is a list of some of the easiest and most basic ways to keep abreast of food safety and food hygiene at both home and at work.

1.Use a proper kitchen cleaner that attacks and kills harmful germs.
2.Regularly clean out rubbish bins, cupboards, drawers, fridges and freezers.
3.Wash all dishes in hot soapy water.
4.Keep raw meat away from cooked meat.
5.Wash salad before eating.
6.A safe standard of cooking is 75 degrees C or above.
7.Cooked food should be eaten within 3 days.
8. Clean all spillages as soon as they happen.
9.Keep children away from boiling pans, boiling kettles, hot ovens, and knives.
10.Don’t let animals near food preparation areas.

Kitchen cleaners can be anything from a specific type of bleach to surface detergents, creams and sprays are most common for kitchen use. Gloves are advised when using bleach, and clothes or sponges should be thoroughly washed before using again in the future.

Regularly cleaning out your kitchen bins, whether at home or in the workplace helps to eliminate germs from hanging around for long periods of time, it also helps to keep a bin from rotting as food remnants are usually found in the base of a bin once the liner has been removed.

If dishes aren’t cleaned with hot soapy water they can still hold particles of food where bacteria and germs can grow, resulting in contaminated foods. Dishes that have held raw meat, poultry and fish should always be washed, checked and rinsed before draining.

The safety and hygiene rule about not keeping raw meat with cooked meat is one that we should all practice. Different types of food poisoning from salmonella to campylobacter can be caused by this. Store all cooked foods in airtight containers away from raw foods, and it should eliminate bacteria transferring between the two.

Washing salad before eating is simply to wash off any elements such as dirt, soil, mud, and creepy crawlies.

Anything that is cooked and eaten hot should be cooked until it reaches 75 degrees C, this reduces the risk of any food poisoning.

If food has been cooked and isn’t eaten straight away, the rule of thumb is that if stored correctly it will keep for up to 3-days and can be eaten during this period.

Cleaning spillages as they happen can reduce the risk of injury from slipping and falling, it will also remove any germs that may have been lurking on the floor or work surface, and it eliminates any odours.

It is common sense to keep children away from boiling water, hot ovens and sharp knives, yet many kitchen accidents happen as a result of poor supervision. Children are intuitive by nature so teaching them the dangers of a kitchen from a young age is a must.

Keeping animals away from food preparation areas is common sense, but in household kitchens our pets can jump on work surfaces, so always keep these areas clean.
