Losing your eyesight can be a scary prospect to go through as you need your eyes to help you to keep doing basic day-to-day tasks in your life. It is therefore crucial that we keep our eyes protected so we can still keep doing the things we need to with a fuller, and unimpaired vision. So with eyesight protection in mind here are five things we can do to protect our eyes from the unnecessary damage that can happen to them:

1) How to properly remove things from your eyes

The most important thing to remember is that you should never rub your eyes if you get something in them, as this will only make it worse and you could run the risk of damaging your eyes even further. As instead you should use these two simple solutions to get a bit of grit or some small bugs out of your eye. The first solution is to either blink rapidly and the second solution is gently pull your top eyelid down over your bottom eyelid to try and flush the foreign object(s) out of your eye. You could also use an eye wash solution or water to rinse your eyes out with. However, you should always remember to seek medical attention if the particle in your eye is too big, has cut your eyeball in some way or is still currently embedded into your eye.

2) When to seek medical attention for your eyes

According to the NHS online you must to seek Accident and Emergency (A&E) medical attention for your eyes if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • persistent or severe eye pain

  • foreign bodies that can't be washed out

  • decreased vision or double vision

  • flashing lights, spots, halos or shadows in your field of vision

  • blood visible in your eye

  • an irregularly shaped pupil (the black dot at the centre of the eye)

  • pain when exposed to bright light

  • deep cuts around your eye

  • and/or if your eye is sticking out of your eye socket

3) Superfoods that help fight macular degeneration

Macular Degeneration is a particularly nasty eye disorder that affects the older generations in society and involve the loss of a person’s central vision. However if you have a good intake of zeaxanthin and lutein then this can help prevent a loss of vision for people when they get older. So there are ten key foods that contain both of the previously listed nutrients, which have been assembled into a list from the foods that have the highest nutrient richness to the foods that have lowest nutrients richness. Thus this list contains foods such as: kale, cress, spinach (raw and cooked from raw), peas, squash, green lettuce, brussel sprouts, asparagus and then finally carrots.

4) What to do if you spend a lot of time on computers

Spending too much time on computers can make your eyes feel tired and strained. Thus prolonged staring at a computer screen can lead to eye discomfort, headaches, itchy eyes and difficulty focusing. However you can prevent these computer-eye afflictions by taking time out from staring at the computer and by pausing to look out the window every now and then. Additionally, you can also blink your eyes more often when you use a screen-based device and you can also stretch you head and neck to further keep you from strenuously over-using your eyes on screen-based devices.

5) How to protect your eyes at wor

There are many different dangers that you may experience in your work environment such as air-bound splintering wood chips, rogue ricocheting nails, and paint thinner spillages to name a few examples. It is therefore crucial to protect your eyes from all the different dangers of the workplace. You can do this in many different ways such as by buying polycarbonate safety glasses for hammering and electric tool usage, by getting some goggles to protect you from flying debris as and dangerous chemicals, or you can also purchase a full face shield for welding depending on which job need to get sorted first.
