I am repeating below the first post from this blog, which outlines the medications which eventually worked for me. These are the drugs which work currently, but you will need to confirm with the Centre for Digestive Diseases, for the specific treatments best for your condition(s).

Multi-Drug Resistant Dientamoeba Fragilis and Blasto Hominis Infection - Cure Information.

Over one year of suffering 2011-2012. I am providing this information to help other sufferers of these parasites and to let them know just how hard they can be to get rid of.

The parasites can mess up one's enteric (gut) nervous system, and suppress stomach acid secretion, such that even if you are cured, you may end up with post-infective irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), food malabsorbtion issues, or intolerances to certain foods.

My general symptoms of parasitical infection:

Abdominal pain/cramping, persistent diarrhoea, fatigue and weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite, explosive and frequent belching, shaky hands and bloodshot eyes. Occasional nausea.

My theory as to why previous oral multi-antibiotic treatments failed, in my case, is that D. fragilis can lodge in the intestinal mucosa, so antibiotics in the blood stream did not penetrate the mucosa and therefore were rendered ineffective.

Note: A normal stool test will not reveal your parasites unless you are very lucky. You need a proper 3-day parasitology stool test from a reputable pathology lab such as Histopath in Sydney. You can post samples, and they will bulk bill. Until I found this out I was paying around $130 per test from Healthscope Functional Pathology.

Overall, the parasite infection probably cost me over $5,000. There is no quick fix. You need to stick to your guns and not give up. There is hope. The Centre for Digestive Diseases (CDD) in Sydney is at the forefront of this research.

My treatment history and eventual cure, to date has been as follows:

(Personal names removed for privacy).

2011
March 2011
(diagnosed with Dientamoeba Fragilis.):
·Metronidazole (Flagyl) – 2 Repeats – ordered by GP
·Doxycyline – 2 repeats – ordered by GP

Symptoms resolved for some months but returned in force in August.

August 2011
·GP - Referred to Dr.(Gastroenterologist)

September 2011
·Gastroenterologist treated me with the Centre for Digestive Diseases protocol for Dientamoebiasis. This consisted of Doxycycline and Secnidazole for 10 days from the Sydney Compounding Chemist.
·Gastroenterologist performed a Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy which revealed inactive gastritis a week after completing the above treatment. No other bowel problems such as colitis.

Symptoms resolved somewhat for almost three weeks before returning.

October 2011
·Negative for H. Pylori, and all other bacteria such as C. difficile. Blood tests normal – ordered by new GP.
·Gastroenterologist advises situation is beyond his expertise.
·Referred to – Infectious Diseases Specialist (Department of Microbiology) Hospital

November 2011
·Infectious Diseases Specialist suspected Entamoeba histolytica, and prescribed a course of Tinidazole (500mg, 40 caps) 2 gm daily for 10 days. He also prescribed Albendazole (200mg, 6 caps) 400mg daily for 3 days.
·Complete Digestive Stool Analysis and Three Day Parasitology test (from Healthscope Functional Pathology) revealed Dientamoeba Fragilis in all samples.
·Infectious Diseases Specialist prescribed the Centre for Digestive Diseases protocol for resistant Dientamoeba. This consisted of Secnidazole (400mg, 30 Caps) Furazolidone (100mg, 30 caps) Nitazoxanide (500mg, 20 caps) and Doxycycline (50mg, 25 caps) for 10 days from the Sydney Compounding Chemist.

December 2011
·Results – Still positive for Dientamoeba fragilis
·Diagnosed Fructose Intolerant (Vent-I-Late)

January 2012
Travel to Centre for Digestive Diseases – Sydney
Test of sample from colonoscopy showed Blastocystis Hominis (low numbers) as well as Dientamoeba fragilis - Histopath

11 January 2012
Administration – Colonoscopy Infusion
·Triple Therapy Syringe Diloxanide Furoate 4500 mg liquid (50 ml)
·Triple Therapy Syringe Paromomycin 4500 mg liquid (50 ml)
·Triple Therapy Syringe Iodoquinol 2000 mg liquid (x2 in 40 ml)

12 January 2012

·Triple Therapy Syringe Diloxanide Furoate 4500 mg liquid (50 ml)
·Triple Therapy Syringe Paromomycin 4500 mg liquid (50 ml)
·Triple Therapy Syringe Iodoquinol 4000 mg liquid (50 ml)

Post Treatment
·Nitazoxanide (500 mg, 20 Caps) over 10 days
·Ondansentron (8 mg, 20 Caps) – not antibiotic – just anti nausea.
·VSL#3 Probiotics

Mid-January 2012
·Family tested for presence of parasites – 3-day parasitology stool testing completed
·Husband and daughter – no parasites detected. (Histopath)
·Young son – test revealed he is infected with Dientamoeba fragilis.
·Son frequently lethargic and needing naps, teary. Complains of stomach pain at school sometimes, also at home on occasion.
·What five year old says their favourite hobby is sleeping?

21 February 2012
·GP to discuss son’s condition. Agreed to treat son.

27 February 2012
·Son treated with Furazolidone (30 mg, 30 caps); Secnidazole (120 mg, 30 caps) Nitazoxanide (150 mg, 20 caps) for 10 days.

17 March 2012
·Sheppard Works Dietician (for Gastro problems).
·Will attempt Low Fodmap Diet.

20, 21, 22 March 2012
·3 Day Parasitology Stool test (Histopath)

Week starting 9 April - Son's stool test
·3 Day Parasitology Stool test (Histopath)

2 April - Negative test result from Histopath received –
·Negative for Blastocystis Hominis and Dientamoeba Fragilis.

23 April – Update: Low Fodmap diet helping alleviate symptoms
·Post-infective IBS causing belching and occasional stomach pain if Fodmap foods consumed.
·Kefir (live culture) very beneficial at replacing good gut bacteria.

30 April – Check Son's Histopath Results
·Results not in yet.

1 May 2012 - Much improved, 1-3 soft stools per day. Pain (cramps) and belching if high fodmap foods consumed. Post infective IBS managed well otherwise.

5 May 2012 - My little son's test results (3-day parasitology stool testing) are in and he has tested negative for Dientamoeba fragilis! What a happy happy day - we have come full circle and are ecstatic!!
