Healing "Leaky Gut", One Bite At A Time
".. all autoimmune diseases have one thing in common – intestinal permeability"

In 2014 I learned that my Human Design teacher had been suffering from "the progressive form of Multiple Sclerosis". On October 24th (the day my beloved sister crossed the threshold) my "teacher" replied to my message in which I had said: "As soon as I read: 'the progressive form of Multiple Sclerosis' I switched into research mode and started this blog: "MS and the New Medicine!"
My teacher replied: "I am onto Wahl's Protocol".
I then jumped right into learning about "Wahl's" and by and large appreciate virtually everything I've read so far (with very few exceptions).
I continued to cross-reference what I read
Multiple Sclerosis is apparently considered to be an autoimmune disease. "Why is autoimmunity so prevalent? As Hippocrates accurately said, All disease begins in the gut. Our modern diet and lifestyles cause permeable digestive tracts so that we are prone to develop autoimmunity or have a child with a predisposition for autoimmunity."
How does the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol support healing?
"... It has been shown recently in studies that all autoimmune diseases have one thing in common – intestinal permeability, otherwise known as leaky gut. ... All of the foods avoided on the autoimmune protocol are those that have been shown to exacerbate leaky gut, and strict avoidance gives it a chance to heal."
So far all of this is mostly focused on what I would call the nutritional component of health and I haven't seen the "psychie & health" connection mentioned at all (at least from terrywahls.com)! Therefore, this blog needs to be continued with a "new medicine" additional perspective or you can see what I have posted so far.

30 Day Wahls Paleo Plus QuickStart
The Wahls Protocol
Autoimmune disorders are running rampant across the United States (of America). Those of us who aren’t personally afflicted by Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Thyroid Disorder or some such disease, know someone who is.
I credit Dr. Wahls for giving me the guidance I needed to manage the symptoms of my own autoimmune disorder (Hashimoto’s Disease) through diet and lifestyle changes. (Ed. note: I do not know who is stating this. cj)
One day, I hope more emphasis will be placed on the prevention and natural healing of these diseases in America. But for now, I’m doing what I can to use my own passion to help others to understand that diet and lifestyle can stop their suffering.
Dr. Wahls has been with me several times in the past, most recently to introduce the first two levels of the 30-Day Wahls QuickStart Program. ...
... Beyond the Food: Healing your symptoms with the Wahls Protocol
Dr. Terry Wahls, in case you aren’t familiar with her, is a highly regarded professor of internal medicine at the University of Iowa. She became an Internet sensation with her TED talk video that went viral, having reached almost 2 million views. In that video, Dr. Wahls spoke about how she managed to overcome progressive secondary MS, getting herself out of a wheelchair and on her bicycle, pedaling to work each day.
Dr. Wahls is the author of Minding Your Mitochondria and The Wahls Protocol. She also happens to be a personal friend of mine.
... the third level of the 30-Day Wahls QuickStart Program ... covers...
* The danger of environmental toxins AND how to eliminate them naturally
* The importance of exercise AND how to become active even when you’re not mobile
* What to do about your current medications and which supplements you should take
* The connection between stress and insulin resistance
* Elimination diets, blood tests, and other functional medicine you might consider
* How to manage your expectations and what sort of recovery to expect

November 10, 2018 - Dr. Terry Wahls on TEDx Sponsors & Its "Curatorial Decisions" -
One of my first opportunities to share my story was through a TEDx talk I gave in Iowa City, which has gotten over 1.5 million views and counting. In the talk, I explain how eating for optimal health helped me overcome the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and how it can help others.
TED is a nonprofit that brings speakers in front of an audience to spread ideas and stories in 18 minutes. In turn, TEDx is an opportunity for individuals and organizations in a community to create a local dialogue about science, technology, entertainment, and other topics.
But now, TED has chosen to add a warning label to my talk. During my talk, a message is posted at the bottom: “Note from TED: This talk, which features health advice based on personal narrative, has been flagged as potentially outside TED’s curatorial guidelines. Viewer discretion advised.”
Having read the literature and now begun my own clinical trials, I am one of the few researchers who tests the impact of structured Paleo diets in the form of the Wahls™ diet plan on patients with secondary progressive MS. In another year, we will complete our current clinical trial, Wahls Paleo Diet and Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, and know even more about the nutrient density of these diets as well as their effect on disease progression, blood vessel health, and cellular health.
Yet despite my research and the many thousands of other scientific studies available on http://www.pubmed.gov that show that increased consumption of vegetables and berries and decreased consumption of processed foods are both associated with lower rates of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune disease, and mental health problems, TED warns that “viewer discretion is advised” for my talk.
My key message is about eating 9 cups of vegetables and berries each day, along with a personal narrative of how I developed my nutrient-dense diet based on thorough research. My personal health narrative is not the first shared on TED either. TED endorsed personal stories about illness and recovery when it hosted Jill Bolte Taylor’s talk, My Stroke of Insight. Yet her story has no warning label. What could explain this hypocrisy?
Perhaps TED’s sponsors are influencing its curatorial decisions. Monsanto is a major TED funder, as are several major pharmaceutical companies. Monsanto, an agricultural, chemical, and biotech company, is also one of the biggest proponents of food alteration via genetic modification. The genetically modified organisms (GMOs) they create are being connected to various health issues and environmental damage, which makes sense–changing the DNA of our food is likely to change how our bodies react to and process that food.
These companies don’t want you to consume a healthful, nutrient-dense diet that feeds your mitochondria and is free of GMOs, such as the Wahls™ Diet. They don’t want you to heal your body at the cellular level, so that pharmaceutical drugs are no longer needed to attempt to keep the symptoms of illness and disease in check. That would be bad news for their bottom line, and I can only imagine this is why my logical, researched talk now comes with a warning label from TED.

"... studies out of Europe have shown that higher doses of lecithin replenish the lining of the gut wall, nourish the goblet cells that line the gut wall, and treats ulcerative colitis as effectively as conventional medicines."
In the "Master Recipe List" it appears that soy milk is permitted for the Wahls diet but "not acceptable" for the "Wahls Paleo" and "Wahls Paleo Plus". Also certain greens that have been recommended they be cooked rather than consumed raw are included raw.
