"Your hypothalamus (in your brain) produces a compound called TRH (thyrotropin releasing hormone) also known as protirelin, which signals your pituitary gland at the base of your brain to release another compound called TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)." (1)
THS acts as your body’s metabolic regulator which includes the function of every organ and every cell in your body.
"In a hypothyroid state, the thyroid gland is releasing inadequate amounts of thyroid hormone to meet the body’s metabolic demands, and the metabolic rate is therefore reduced.
The thyroid gland produces two major hormones; Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). "The majority of T4 is actually converted into T3 inside the cells of the body" providing that you have the adequate nutrition plus additional factors.
" ... in many individuals, the more active form of thyroid hormone, T3,
will be suppressed. Therefore, the ‘Poor T4 to T3 Converter’ who
has a normal TSH will exhibit many of the signs and symptoms of
hypothyroidism. There are many reasons why an individual will
have problems converting T4 into T3."(2)
The following are a number of nutrient, medication and other factors that can cause an inability to convert T4 to T3, the most common of the "thyroid" conditions known as “thyroid resistant” or “cellular hypothyroidism.”:
Birth Control Pills
Iodinated Contrast Agents
Nutrient Deficiencies -
"Your thyroid is a precious gland, you only have one. It’s very fragile, shaped like a butterfly at the base of your neck and highly susceptible to chemicals in your pool, your toothpaste, your drinking water and even your new car. All sorts of chemicals can hurt your thyroid gland .... ":
Looking at the list of "Nutrient Deficiencies" I can understand how people who follow a strict vegan diet may be more susceptible to hypothyroidism and how eating soy products may only worsen the situation.
