After open heart surgery, what happens? Read part II of the story, symptoms, surgery, recovery.

Recapping a little, after the overt signs of heart failure, I underwent the angiogram and was told it was too late for any of the other interventions, the pump was "worn out." I did the open heart surgery (triple vessel.

Just in case you don’t fully understand about open heart surgery, the key word is “open,” meaning they open your chest to get to your heart and in spite of the wondrous technology, that remains the only way to get into the chest cavity for serious stuff. An electric saw is used to cut open the sternum, and bone splitters (shudder) are used to break open the ribs. The muscles are “separated” (and you better believe that is a kind of an innocuous word for cut, split) then the ribs are lifted so the heart is fully exposed.

The heart is stopped and blood is pumped and circulated by a machine. When they are done, the ribs and sternum are wired shut, the muscles sewn back together and you are short a couple of arteries used as grafts in the process (saphenous in the leg and mammary in the chest). Please believe me when I tell you that the body is outraged with this treatment and informs the nerves in no uncertain manner that it is HURTING.

Battling back with the totally changed being that I presumed was now me was very interesting and challenging. I was on oxygen 24/7 and was amazed at how little I could do. Working day by day, the improvement was trackable, but I was easily discouraged.

I would invite you to read my whole story on the recovery process by visiting me at:
I'll be back again to talk about PREVENTION!! Easier than you think.
