Harpo is in HEAVEN! by harpolove 15 y
- making life special by Tina Andrews 15 y
Yes my Dad, who people called Harpo, did make life special. He encouraged me to learn how to swim, not just to swim but to go as far as I could out in the SF Bay.
This was an amazing accomplishment especially for a skinny kid like myself and also when you consider how cold the SF water could be.At first my Dad and I swam parallel to the beach but as I became more experienced he told me it was time to get out there. We swam as far as we could at Aquatic Hyde Beach, almost reaching Alcatraz. Thinking back it was amazing what we accomplished. I later became a certified lifeguard and I passed on that love for swimming onto my children, especially my son, who loves to swim.
My Dad may have fed the sheep, the homeless, the hungry, the down and out, but he often forgot to feed his own family. My mother rarely got child support payments. She struggled working at minimun wage to support us. We needed Harpo in our lives not so much for his money but for his love, his presence. I wanted to have a DAD desperately. Unlike you I found I could not count on him 100%. He often promised he would come to my birthday, my piano recital, my school play, my ballet recital, my gradations, but he didn't. He meant well I guess promising me these things.
My Dad broke my heart so many times. Later I would remember these painful experiences when dealing with men and their dating games. For hours I would wait by the phone for my Dad to call. It never rang. I would look out the window for my Dad but he never showed up. Sometimes he did arrive and surprise me with only a few minutes to spare before the significant event. There were a few special moments we shared like several Christmas Eve midnight mass, a few Easter Sundays, 3 or 4 birthdays but for the most part my Dad chose to live within his own circle of friends and his chosen family blocking out his real family. It is a puzzlement.
Both my mom and I adored him.
