Blog 5 – Be desirable again!

I was incandescent with rage today, (well I wasn’t quite that bad but I read once about how one of the British royal family was incandescent with rage and I felt it was something to aspire to!) but I was pretty mad. Many of the weight loss advertisements and spam emails that I am getting are false, misleading, manipulative, and preying on people who are unhappy with their size. But the above statement “be desirable again” was on an advertisement in the local paper here in Manila, with a picture of an overweight unhappy person. (In case you wondered, I am British and living my dream of residing in Asia enjoying the life here, but with frequent trips back to good old Britain – funny how I miss green fields with black and white cows).

I take great exception to this advert. It is insinuating that as an overweight person you are not desirable Wrong! Many people who are overweight are very sexy and lovely; and you are piling more problems onto them rather than help alleviate them – of course the objective is to make your stupid product be the only thing that helps them (gosh it is rarely as a yogi that I get so cross!!! But this makes me furious).

People who are overweight do not need more negativity piled on them. My theory is that we need to love and accept ourselves as we are and then do something to improve our lives and wellbeing, because frequently it is our lives that are not working for us hence we over eat. That is, we get bored, feel lonely, get excited, angry, depressed, sad etc – all these can be triggers for you to console yourself by eating. (Which of course compounds the problem, gosh how many times I have overeaten in the past for the above reasons and then woken up the next day and felt much worse). If you belong to the group of people who purely pile on surplus poundage because you overeat then you are fortunate, because usually it is much more than that and the mind plays an important part in healing and resolving overweight and body image issues. Overweight cannot be miraculously removed by a pill, hard strenuous exercise or melting your fat away – which is what the “be desirable again” brigade were referring to.

My starting or turning point regarding weight and body image issues came when I started to love and accept myself just as I was, this doesn’t mean I had to stay big, but when you accept that you are desirable just as you are this will give your body, mind and spirit the platform to make conscious positive choices in your life. These should be to speak positively, eat healthily, be aware of what you eat (my goodness how many things used to find their way into my mouth without me even realising I was eating it), exercise mindfully which teaches you awareness, relax to calm you so you don’t emotionally overeat and use food as a crutch, talk about your challenges with other like minded people, (hence we always have a support group in my Yoga for Slimmers organisation), and realise that weight management is a life time thing, but it can be a fantastically happy journey. Enjoy the journey and if you see that advert or similar ones, ignore them, you are desirable and wonderful just as you are. And lastly any organisation which uses manipulation and rudeness and demoralisation to procure clients is not worth bothering with. Honest methods of marketing and a sensible holistic approach to fat reduction is the only way which will ultimately succeed permanently in this terrible epidemic obesity which causes not only health problems but also a miserable existence – Remember I know because I have been there.
Remember you are desirable just as you are and you have my permission to rip up any silly adverts which offend you, just love yourself as you are, and believe me, you will come to look at your weight management from a new perspective, one that is positive and loving, and that is a great starting place, one that will finally work. Love and blessings.

It's really tough - that move of "accepting" yourself. I totally agree that overweight people are piled on with negativity, and the more that comes, the further away you feel from "normal" and the harder it is to see yourself there.

I was having a lot of success a month ago envisioning myself at a good goal weight, and still practicing 'loving' the excess weight I'm carrying around at the moment. I was also using a great visualization CD I got, which I haven't listened to for a while (a lot of relaxation and then positive affirmations, etc.)

I'm a huge fan of yoga and, though I've been going to the gym in the burn calories rat-race, I returned to my iyengar studio for a level II class last week and it was such a treat!

      That's true for me.
