  • On the Appalachian Trail we met " Just an Echo "...   by  kerminator     19 y     2,969       5 Messages Shown       Blog: My Unusual Road of Life....

Well we can say that the great outdoors offers many unexpected things.... So it was as we did part of the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail (AT) this week....

Our schedule was to do about thirty some miles of the Georgia section of the AT, in under four days, or all most 10 miles a day...   One of my brothers who just happened to live about twenty miles from the southern terminus of the AT, dropped us off at Woody gap trail crossing, at 16:30 on Wensday...  There was some light rain, but not any real threats, so we pressed on...  We made the camp site by 18:30, got the tent up, made a fire and found the water source... They had a nice timber bridge over the creek, not sure why, unless there was some other trail head beond...  We ate our MREs and enjoyed some fellowship, and the first nite on the AT...

The there was a Brat Boot Camp down from us but they were not too rambunctious, so everything went well...  Got up and packed up heading up to Gooch Mt shelter for lunch...  The MREs were OK, and since they had the reheat packs we did not have to cook over the open fire...  Just use the fire for light and to boil water, for tea... We will discuss a  70 year old Trail Guru; know by his handle: "Just an Echo", on our next posting....

Check some of the details on "Southern Etiquette" blog, today...

Will pick this up tomorrow...   see ya..   The best is yet to come, stay tuned...

Kerminator, I'm certain you had some extremely interesting discussions with Echo - Just as I did with him one year ago in New York State. He is a man of great feeling and knowledge, and has wonderful tales to tell of his backpacking experiences. I miss him a great deal and have hoped to be able to meet up with him again. Should you happen to see Echo after reading this note, I would very much appreciate it if you would say "hello" to him from me. I hope he will remember the peaceful days he spent with me and my family and our llamas in New York State near Port Jervis in late-July/mid-August of 2004. I also hope he will visit us here again. Please help me connect with my friend if you can. Many thanks, and Happy Trails! ... Faarside aka WhiteHorse.

It is good to hear from someone who has met one of the masters of the trail.... He was on his way down to Southwest FLA, for a Sept. doctor's appointment... He had been staying with some friends in Hiawassee Ga just before we over took him at Hawk Mt. shelter, last week... He is truly a fine man who has proved that just because society has counted you down and out, it is possible to over come the obsticals in your life and move ahead.... It is attitude folks.... ATTITUDE!! DUH!!
Will let you know if we catch him on the trail again...

Many thanks for your response! Echo is a fine man full of exceptional wisdom and humor, and I miss our time spent together sharing stories and experiences. I pray his appointment goes well. Hopefully he (and you) will not get caught-up in the bad weather churned-up by hurricane Katrina. I do not know if I am yet prepared to venture onto the Trail by myself and make the trip south in hopes of meeting-up with Echo. However, I pray for the knowledge and strength to make that decision soon. My gear stands ready. Thank you again - best of luck on your journey - Happy Trails! -- Faarside aka WhiteHorse.

Yea; it would be good to catch back up with him on the trail, again...  He usually comes back in the spring going north....   Did you know he had a close call with hypothermia in NC, a while back??   Maybe we will see you on the trail, we plan to go back in the spring, north to NC....   See ya... k
