Blog: Plant Your Dream!
Peter Dukich has been making Biodynamic Compost for more than fifty years.
He spend his last birthday, his 92, here at the Enchanted Garden Intentional Community.
Peter's legacy is extensive.
One of his gifts to humanity is Peter's Powder, a fine shfting of biodynamic compost
that he did himself. He left a warehouse full. Much of it was spread out at the Tierra Miguel
Farm in San Diego County. A large amount is being stored at Steven Spangler's
Exotica Rare Fruit Nursery in Vista, Peter's Powder may be purchased there.
Phone 760.724.9093.
Peter was here for his 92nd birthday.
We did an experiment.
We had two sunflowers.
We planted them about five feet apart.
Peter planted one. I planted the other.
His Sunflower had his Peter's Powder. Mine did not.
His Sunflower bloomed three weeks before mine.
His gave about fifty seeds for the next generation.
Mine was eaten by insects. I have one seed I harvested.
I spoke to Peter about two months before he died.
I told him I would make a new label for Peter's Powder.
This is a man who said the Lord's Prayer every day.
His love for Mother Earth Resounds forever in the hearts of those
who love her.
I will be bringing some of the Peter's Powder to the Pacific Symposium '07,
and do a ritual with it.
I will plant a new generation of Sunflowers for the seeds remaining,
dedicated to the Rebirth of Mother Earrth.

charlotte is sending the label...
I cannot find my bottle of Peter's Powder.
I would feel more grounded to have it here.
Today I am feeding the Earth.

the Soil of my Being.
The Earth and the Sour are Soilmates.

Allan Balliett, the moderator of BD Now! (an Internet forum on Biodynamics) responded to my introduction (an absolute requirement for entrance into the forum) and in particular in regards to Peter Dukich:

Chef Jem - I met Peter Dukich in Chapel Hill, NC a long long time
ago. He taught me how to make compost and he warned me to not wear
out my teeth by chewing too long and hard while I'm still young. (He
showed me how he had worn his own molars downs.) He and his students
have been an influence on my life and my biodynamics for a long long
time.
Thank you for the lengthy introduction.
Talk more, later.

BD Now!"
Maybe Allan would like to know about Peter's Powder?
I'm certainly impressed with your report on the sunflowers!
May I see the label you're creating for PP?

P.S. I want to continue encouraging the lovers of raw milk to consider doing a little outreach to their other "milk"-drinking friends by sharing viewings of "The Raw Milk Controversy: Fact & Fiction" DVD.
I see I have messages from Mark McAfee that I will attend to now and possibly post in a little bit. cj

Another Peter Dukich memory from BDNow:
Digest, Vol 1628, Issue 1 - Message: 3
Date: Wed, 26 Dec 2007
From: "Mark Trela"
Subject: BD Now! Welcome Chef Jem!
To:
"Welcome to Chef Jem and all of our recent introductees!
You mentioned Peter Dukich and his recent passing of which I was unaware. Peter was my inspiration and mentor back in the early 1980's.
He conducted Saturday morning workshops at his home in Simi Valley.
The workshops actually went longer than the morning and spilled all over the house, the yard and anywhere else Peter felt like taking us. I remember vividly one morning when he took us all out into the small front yard to admire his orange tree. He had an earthen trough of BD compost around the tree. He picked an orange, sliced it for all to sample and watched with delight as everyone's face lit up at the incredible tastes from this fruit.
He was passionate about his BD compost and probably made tons of it during his life. He would screen it meticulously and bag it to order. Once he boasted that many of his cars were purchased with the sale of his
BD compost.
He gardened at the Highland Hall Waldorf School for a time and the garden radiated his light touch.
He even had a light blue Cadillac hearse. He'd built a long box to slide in where the coffin would rest and that is how he trucked around his compost. He claims that once while giving a workshop, the weather turned stormy so he piled everyone into the hearse to finish the session!
I moved back to the Midwest (New Harmony) in 1984 carrying the BD torch that Peter had passed to me. In 1987 it was my great fortune to bring him back there to speak at our BD conference.
I'll always remember him as full of enthusiam, life and LIGHT. He could stir you up about BD like no else.
Glad to know he is encouraging us all from beyond the pale.
Mark"
Mark really saw Peter! I would add that Peter's enthusiasm was outrageous! (Somewhat comparable to that of Dr. Bronner and maybe more so! ;^) I do want more of his PP! ;^)
