Thank you for making a phone call to reverse the approval of genetically engineered alfalfa. Making this call is quick and easy, and it will make a big difference!

    WALL STREET JOURNAL STORY

    BILL TOMSON And SCOTT KILMAN

WASHINGTON—The Obama administration Thursday abandoned a proposal to restrict planting of genetically engineered alfalfa, the latest rule-making proposal shelved as part of the administration's review of "burdensome" regulation.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's decision not to regulate alfalfa genetically modified to survive applications of the Monsanto Co. herbicide Roundup is a victory for the big seed and agri-chemicals company and the American Farm Bureau Federation, which represents farmers, who had opposed the proposed curbs that were proposed about a month ago.

The Obama administration said earlier this month it is reviewing all proposed government regulation to weed out proposals that are overly burdensome to businesses—part of a broader effort to repair relations with employers and industry. The administration has also shelved two proposed workplace-safety rules opposed by business.

The USDA is expected to decide next week whether or not to issue a new approval for genetically modified sugar beets in time for planting this year.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization praised Mr. Vilsack Thursday for opting not to place the first planting restrictions on an approved genetically modified crop.

"We hope this will help pave the way for new technologies in the pipeline," BIO President and Chief Executive Jim Greenwood said.

    ALERT

Stop GE Alfalfa Before it Contaminates Organic!

The USDA approved Monsanto's genetically engineered alfalfa, and unless President Obama stops it, it will be widely planted this spring and begin contaminating other crops, including organic alfalfa.

President Obama is the last line of defense and has the power to stop this approval.

Take action to stop the approval for Monsanto's GE alfalfa.

PETITION I SIGNED TO THE PRESIDENT

The USDA has approved Monsanto's Roundup Ready genetically engineered alfalfa. This is the wrong decision and will likely lead to wide spread contamination of other crops, including organic alfalfa. You have the power to stop this. I urge you to reject the USDA's approval of genetically engineered alfalfa.

I care about the integrity of the food I eat, and don't want organic and other non-genetically engineered crops to be contaminated by genetically engineered alfalfa. Please take immediate action to stop this approval.

    Sincerely,
    Leslie

    TO THE PRESIDENT
    I ADDED THIS

This is devastatingly dangerous. Please, GE foods are not healthy. You will go down in history at the president who did extreme harm to the health of the people of our nation unless you stop this. Read "Seeds of Deception" by Jeffrey Smith.

Please read and underscore the Organic Farming Research Foundation statement on GE Contamination.

    GE Alfalfa

In December 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that it was close to making a decision about allowing genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa to be planted in the United States. The agency’s decision (in USDA jargon, it would “deregulate” this new GE crop) comes after a legal battle that eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

If USDA decides to allow GE alfalfa to be planted, it puts organic farmers at risk of widespread GE contamination. Tell the USDA not to allow GE alfalfa.

After the court’s decision, the USDA had to do an assessment of the impact GE alfalfa could have on the environment. That new assessment was released on December 16th,, and it is one of the last steps USDA has to take before approving Monsanto’s genetically engineered Roundup Ready alfalfa.

USDA says it is considering several options for GE alfalfa:

Allow GE alfalfa to be planted anywhere in the U.S. without any restrictions
Continue to regulate GE alfalfa (which means it would not be legal to plant)
Allow GE alfalfa to be planted under certain conditions that vary in different parts of the country.
The correct choice is 2 – not to allow GE alfalfa at all. Why? Because any approval of GE alfalfa puts organic farmers at risk, even under the complicated scheme the agency is proposing as option 3.

The organic standards do not allow the use of GE crops, including for animal feed. Alfalfa is a major feed crop for dairy and beef cattle and a key component of many pastures where livestock are raised. If GE alfalfa is planted and contaminates organic alfalfa, this hurts the livelihoods of organic farmers and puts the integrity of organic food at risk. And USDA’s proposal to divide the country up into zones where different rules apply for how GE alfalfa could be grown is unworkable and unfair – it would turn some parts of the country into sacrifice zones for organic farmers who get contaminated by GE alfalfa.
