5 Different Skin Types: Which Type Do You Have?

Most people are wrong when they try to guess their skin type. Whether it’s oily, dry, or sensitive skin, it needs care and hydration. It can be really tricky to figure out what skin type you have because it can change over time due to climate, diet, hormones, etc.

Most people are wrong when they try to guess their skin type. Whether it’s oily, dry, or sensitive skin, it needs care and hydration. It can be really tricky to figure out what skin type you have because it can change over time due to climate, diet, hormones, etc. Down below you’ll find the 5 types of skin and tips of how you can take proper care of each one of them.

  1. Oily Skin 

The skin naturally secretes oil to keep itself hydrated. For people with larger pores, the oil glands are more active, which means they’ll produce more oil. This can lead to breakouts and oily look throughout the day. You’ll notice that 
oily skin will lead to breakouts every time you apply any kind of moisturizer. People with oily skin have trouble in finding a sunscreen that does not feel sticky. It’s recommended to use oil-free products and avoid thick moisturizers. However, that doesn’t mean you should skip hydration. 

Oily skin can be dry too because water and oil are two completely different things. Hydrating your oily skin might be difficult, considering that moisturizers create the feeling of heavy skin. It’s recommended to use hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that will help the skin retain the water, without leaving a greasy layer on your face. Also, dermatologists recommend a 
personalized skincare routine which helps to maintain your skin clear and healthy. 

When it comes to cleansing, dermatologists recommend products that contain benzoyl peroxide, which helps target the bacteria that produce acne. Glycolic acid is also a product that helps reduce the appearance of large pores. However, if you have very oily skin, skip hydrating in the morning and do it only at nighttime, but never skip sunscreen. 

  1. Sensitive Skin 

People with sensitive skin are prone to inflammation, acne, rosacea, dermatitis, etc. It’s a burning, red and itchy sensation. Also, 
people with sensitive skin should avoid overly rough ingredients in all their skincare products. Because they may lead to irritations. To avoid irritation, people with sensitive skin should not be exposed to excessive heat, friction, and avoid habits like smoking, drinking alcohol or stressing out too much. 

Sensitive skin may also be confused with dry skin. No matter what you apply on your skin it’ll immediately burn or turn red. However, sensitive skin is not a permanent skin type. The most important aspect is to use products that are specially made for this type of skin. Sometimes, sensitive skin can be caused by over-exfoliating, over-scrub, or using overly harsh products. For cleansing sensitive skin, dermatologists recommend using gentle face wash cleansers and paraben-free moisturizers. Also, hydrating serums contain antioxidants and ingredients that help prevent water loss from the skin. 

  1. Dry Skin

Dry skin usually looks lifeless because it’s often covered in a layer of dead skin cells. If you hydrate your dry skin correctly, it will look radiant and smoother. Over-exfoliating your skin is one of the factors that will lead to dryness. Also, sun exposure, taking hot showers and using products like salicylic acid or glycolic acid can dry your skin a lot. Over the years, the skin gets naturally drier due to hormonal changes. Hydrating your dry skin will make it look younger and more radiant. Products that contain sulfates can irritate the skin and make it look uneven. 

Dry skin can handle creamier products better rather than gels and lotions. To avoid your skin to become even more dry, use a cream moisturizer and, of course, sunscreen. For night time, use products that contain retinol and bakuchiol to help hydrate and rejuvenate your skin while you sleep. Also, a gentle cleanser is a must for people with dry skin. 

  1. Normal Skin 

Dermatologists claim that there is no such thing as normal skin. It’s tricky to define normal skin type because it means whatever you think is normal for you. It still can be a combination of different skin types, oily, or dry skin. In fact, normal skin means that your skin can tolerate most products without overreacting. If you have a normal skin type, it means that the skin is healthy and well hydrated. 

In reality, normal skin is actually oily skin with enough sebum production to keep the skin fresh. Of course, this type of skin varies from person to person. Those whose skin type isn’t prone to irritations from skincare ingredients can use a cleanser that removes makeup and pollution, leaving the skin smooth. For moisturizing, it’s recommended to use hydrating gels, oil-free moisturizers that are great for all skin types. 

  1. Combination Skin

Some people incorrectly claim that combination skin means oily in the T-zone and drier on the cheeks but this is classified as an oily skin type. Skin changes seasonally, that means that combination skin is dry in winter and oily in summer. Dermatologists claim the fact that skin types are characterized by the amount of oil production on the face. However, combination skin might feel tight after cleansing. That’s when toner must be included in the skincare routine. It wipes away any traces of oil, adds hydration, and balances the skin’s pH levels. 

Cream cleansers are a great option for combination skin because they’re gentle with the skin and works for both oily and dry parts of your face. It calms and heals the dry skin and, the T-zone where the oil is excessive as well. When it comes to moisturizing, the key is balance. A non-greasy day cream is a perfect choice. It is ideal for those looking to hydrate their skin without the shiny finish. Aloe vera and vitamin E are great ingredients for combination skin. You can find these ingredients in many products, but 
the most efficient way to treat combination skin is to apply a clay mask only on oily areas to get rid of the excess of oil, makeup, and dirt. Also, clay masks prevent breakouts and blackheads from appearing. 

Regardless of your skin type, a daily skincare routine is essential and it helps you to maintain overall healthy and good-looking skin. However, there are 4 easy steps for all skin types that everyone should follow:

  • Hydration

  • Change your pillowcases at least once a week

  • Keep your hair tied up before sleep

  • Wear SPF every day
