I've been very curious over the past few weeks as to just WHY it is
OPC-3 seems to help with pretty darned near EVERY disease imagineable
mankind... so over the weekend, I started to do a bit of research and
is what I have come up with so far.
Let me know if you have any questions :)
First, here is a link to a site completely unrelated to Market America
all kinds of good info about OPC: http://www.opc.cc
And a library here: http://www.chiroonline.net/Library.html
maintained by one of our MA doctors that I've found very helpful when
chatting with folks about different conditions.
To summarize what I have learned: The root of most basic problems seems
be that Systemic Allergies cause Mast Cells to be made. Mast Cells then
trigger pain & inflammation and produce more histamines as well.
The intestines & bladder have a similar Epithelium (lining) made up of
mucosal surface (glycosaminoglycans, or GAG). GAGs and glycoproteins
allow tissue cells to hold together. GAGs and GPs are also necessary
construction and maintenance of nearly all of the bodys connective
and lubricating fluids.
So, a defective GAG layer leading to intestinal permeability could be
start of a disease process that encompasses many seemingly different,
related, conditions. Several conditions share common bonddefects in
linings of the involved organs, which would allow various substances,
ordinarily not found beyond these organs surfaces, to "cross over,"
creating an environment favorable for certain disease processes. This
explain the development of several of these related diseases, from IC,
ulcerative colitis, and Crohns, to allergies, asthma, sensitive skin
fibromyalgia. Once substances are allowed to cross over, this sets up a
chain reaction which could explain the involvement of mast cells,
neurohormones, nerve fibers and pain regulators.
So... The results of the study in a nutshell are: These diseases are
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Chronic Fatigue & Immune Deficiency Syndrome
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Most of these are treated successfully with tricyclic antidepressants
antihistamines, the theory being that they share a common connection
increased pain perception in the central nervous system.
Now... how OPC-3 comes in... OPC-3 is an anti-inflammatory and blocks
Histamine is produced in two ways: 1) Under the influence of
in mast cells; 2) by decarboxylation of an amino acid called histidine.
hinders the HD enzyme and thereby inhibits the production of histamine.
We already know that OPC
(aka Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin) is a natural
compound present in most fruits and vegetables, and particularly in
bark, skin, and seeds. Most notably Proanthocyanidins are found in pine
bark, grape seed, and grape skin. However, bilberry, cranberry, black
currant, green tea, black tea, and other plants also contain these
flavonoids. We also know that it is not usually found in our daily
quantities approaching therapeutic value, and the amount present in raw
is often destroyed during cooking. However, supplementation with OPC
extracted from pine bark and from grape seeds has been shown to protect
against cardiovascular and other degenerative diseases and to have
other benefits, including: lowering LDL cholesterol levels, reducing
platelet aggregation, increasing the strength and elasticity of blood
vessels, helping collagen repair itself, reducing edema and
relieving functional problems associated with varicose veins, lessening
tendency toward diabetic retinopathy, and improving skin health and
overall immune system function.
It has been known for centuries that OPC
Masquelier explains the anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic activity of
on the basis of their antioxidant activity. Free radicals activate the
release of histamine and other mediators and they are also produced by
mediators. This is how free radicals form essential components in the
development and perpetuation of inflammations and allergic reactions."
in Practice, by Bert Schwitters in Collaboration with Prof. Jack
Masquelier's discovery of OPC's has a well documented proven record of
years of scientific research and human studies, conducted through
universities, scientific institutes, hospitals and clinics by medical
practitioners, dieticians and specialists of various professions.
So, how does OPC
help the immune system?
The good news is that OPC is great at neutralizing peroxynitrate. It
reduces the amount of superoxide available that makes peroxynitrate and
helps to regulate the nitric oxide production so that it stays in
That means your immune system works better, your joints hurt less, and
blood flows better, from OPC.
Keep in mind that when you are dealing with chronic, severe conditions
Crohn's or Fibromyalgia, that the best way to start is by doing a colon
cleanse for one week. That will clean out the toxins that are currently
the system. Then have the customer start to drink 4-6 ounces
times a day, and take Digestive Enzyme w/Probiotics after each meal.
Implementing a low glycemic index diet would also be best as carbs like
white flour products seem to aggravate these conditions.
The Aloe and Digestive Enzymes will help the healing to start. After a
weeks on that regimen, they can start adding OPC and B12 to their
Dosage is based on body weight.
For example, I just recommended the following to a 225 lb woman with
severe crohn's disease: 3 doses of OPC, 3 times a day before each meal
one dose of B12 WITH each meal.
They might want to keep taking the Aloe Juice and Digestive Enzymes to
After a few months of feeling better, then you can cut them back on the
dosage and help them determine the proper maintenance dosage.
Hope this helps everyone to understand OPC a little better :)
