Personally, I don't see any contradiction with Alxander's interpretation, if that was your intent. One is pre-resurrection, the other pre-ascension. There is no conflict between the two.
Post crucifixion, Jesus' spirit goes straight to paradise to be with His Father. Otherwise, the words of comfort to the thief would have been a lie. At the point of resurrection, His spirit is reunited with His new spiritual body, and both are received into heaven as one at the ascension.
