Gum disease, infection and root canal

Hi, I never want to have a root canal done but I went to a dentist and he scared me until I accepted ,it was two root canals and three bridges which I hate, I am afraid of the metal in the bridge, the fillings are not mercury or metal, now I have an infection, I came back and he fix it as he said, told me I have serious problem with gum. he asked me to do cleaning, but it's so expensive
Questions: is there a cheap way to solve the gum disease?
what about the metal on the bridges are they harmful on the long term, should I change them?
third question: what are the negative side of the root canals that I already have
forth question: how can I solve all this mess? is it too late?
