This forum has helped me alot. I have been on the Mirena for 3 years now. When I first got it I had horrible mood swings, feeling so tired all the time. I snapped at everyone. I knew it was the problem. The dr thats inserted it was on vacation. So I went to the er. No dr. Would take it out because they were not the ones who put it in. Which to me, this was outrageous. So by the time my dr came back from vacation, it was as though the symptoms just disappeared. Now that I have had it for 3 years, I am having aweful anxiety, depression, mood swings, loss of appetite, always feeling sick to my stomache, severe headaches to the point I cant open my eyes, and now for the past 2 weeks I am having hot flashes day and night. So bad that I have to change clothes and sheets in the middle of the night. I am the kind of person that can be cold at the beach. Now I never want sex. I have never been this way before. I was always the one pushing for it. Now my husband is not happy with me because I never want him to touch me. I have been snapping at him cause I dont want to when he does. Which is not alot because of his work schedule. I suffer from severe anxiety anyways so Ive been thinking I was just nuts. Now I have no insurance and have no idea how I will get it removed. I need my normal function of life back. I never want to get out of the bed. My 5 year old and my husband are suffering and I feel like there is nothing I can do about it. Im stuck.
I've had the Mirena insert for over a year now. I've had all the same symptoms others have had (anxiety, depression, headaches, endless discharge, sore breasts, weight gain), but I've recently started having stress incontinence. It's not terrible and it's not all the time, but I can't figure out how much of this is just what happens when you're in your 40s and have had two vaginal births. I was having urge issues even before I had the IUD inserted, and my gyn told me I needed to lay off the caffeine because I likely had overactive bladder. But lately, even if I go to the bathroom right before I exercise (running and karate are my two forms of physical activity), I always feel like I have to pee. And occasionally, and really unexpectedly, some urine will come out! Ugh. I'm scheduled to have the IUD removed in a week (and I'm fearing the crash), so I guess I'll find out for sure if the device is causing/exacerbating the problem. But I'm wondering if anyone else has had any issues with feeling like they have to pee even if they've just gone, feeling like they're not able to empty completely, or having episodes of stress incontinence (peeing when they jump or run or cough or the like). Thanks! And it's nice to know, btw, that I'm not alone in my Mirena experiences (which was pitched to me like I wouldn't have any side effects other than spotting. Ha.).
Totally possible. If you search "Mirena" and "Interstitial Cystitis" you will come up with a few results in this forum. It doesn't sound like what you're dealing with (your version is much more mild) but progesterone/progestin is known to irritate the bladder and relax the urethra. This is one of the reasons pregnant women are more prone to uti's and bladder infections.
I suffered from uti's while I had the mirena (only had one in my life before insertion then proceeded to have one every month for a long time), which stopped when I had it removed.
Unfortunately, because I was having a really hard time with the "crash" post-mirena, I started using progesterone cream, which funnily enough, cleared up my crash symptoms (mostly dry eye, insomnia, anxiety, and acid reflux)but left me with a foggy brain and bladder problems AGAIN. Now I have some urge incontinence, recurrent uti's, and major bladder/urethra irritation, which was diagnosed as possible IC -- but has been getting better over time (yay!) hang in there, I suspect it will clear up for you!
yes, exactly what you described happened to me. i couldnt go 1 hour without hitting a bathroom. i became severely dehydrated because i couldnt hold water. the condition is called polyuria. it went away almost immediately after removal.
I'm 37 years old and I've had the Mirena for 2 years now. Within the last 6-8 months I have been experiencing the same thing. I feel like I have to pee all the time. When the feeling comes on it is an EMERGENCY! I have had minor accidents. I havent had children either. I've never had this problem before and I limit my caffeine already so that is likely not the issue for me. I'm waiting until the first of the year and telling my Dr to take it out and do ablation. The more I think about this thing inside me all the time, expressing the same amount of medication for me as it does for you and every other DIFFERENT woman.... it doesn't seem right. Good Luck to you!
Hi, I had SO many issues with Mirena to include the one you mention, I hated it. I had the Dr take it out a month ago and had the Nova Sure done (ablation) best thing I could ever do!!!! I recomd it! Good luck to you Denise
Well Jenny, I am a guy, but I do know what you're talking about. I've my wife has had Mirena for over a year and a half. About a month after our last child was born, my wife decided to go to the doctor and have it put in. BIG MISTAKE. We couldn't have sex the month before because she tore during birth. However, she was sexua| in other ways like normal. About a week after having this thing placed, she had no desire. Even when she wasn't in the mood before, she could get in the mood quickly. Our doctor told us it was probably a bad reaction to the child birth. Maybe, but I doubt it.
Anyways, after a month of having this thing in, my wife was changing rapidly. Her hair began to fall out. Bad. The tub was always covered with her hair. She had a back problem that bugged her. After a month, she was in so much pain, she couldn't sleep without having to lay in the tuck and cover position. Her breasts begain to swell and look purple because they could not handle it anymore. They were sensitive and always hurt. She had serious hip problems that extended down her legs. Her feet were always cold even after a hot foot bath. She could not sleep. She couldn't eat without getting sick. Yet she gained weight fast. She had frequent headaches. She began getting moody, withdrawn. Always highly irritable. Ex. "Pass the salt" "What my foods not good enough for you?" Yeah, little things set her off. She was always anxious. Money wasn't a problem, but she always thought if we spent more than we usually did we'd have to live on the streets. Depression. No sex drive. We were going almost a month without having sex because she didn't feel like it. She couldn't lubricate properly when we did. She is always depressed for no reason. Our doctor referred us to a relationship therapist. Yeah, we fought sometimes, but never that bad. We always made up. She's exhausted all the time. Even after getting good sleep.
The problems that began after this thing was inserted were horrible. My wife had never acted like that. She was very sexual. We used to have sex 5 times a week sometimes twice a day. We still did while she was pregnant with our last child. Our doctor had my wife convinced it was everything but Mirena. She still is skeptical. Changes like these just don't happen coincidentally after a procedure like this. Even more so a month and a half after the baby was born and she had no ill effects until this thing went in.
Well, here's the sad part of my story. After two years of having this thing in, my wife asked for a divorced. We're getting divorced in three months. She has been like this for so long. She did have pre-existing problems with mental health, but very mild. Sometimes she would get worried. Sometimes a little sad. She always got over it in a day or so before Mirena. After Mirena, she is always like that. Making it worse is the physical problems. She has agreed to get it taken out next week. Maybe the effects will depart within the next three months and she will realize that this thing was hurting her that bad. I've heard stories of women taking months to get over the effects. I've heard of women that never got over it. This thing ruined our marriage. This thing made my wife into something she had never been before in her life. Nothing was mild, severe problems hit almost instantly after insertion. Our doctor lied to us and told us that it was the childbirth. Now our relationship cannot be fixed. There is no way this was all a coincidence.
Mirena does not affect everybody the same. However, my wife has always had bad reactions to birth control. She quit taking three different forms of the pill because she was hit with depression so bad she couldn't get out of bed. People like my wife are getting hit like this everyday. Those who are fine blame everything else for the changes. However, if it worked for them fine, but thousands of women suffering the same problem is no coincidence. Get it taken out if you are experiencing any problems. Don't listen to your doctor. They get a nice fat paycheck to promote this thing. They shouldn't argue with you if you're having trouble with it or think you are. You know how it goes. Doctors aren't paid to argue with you, they're paid to respect your wishes. We suggested this to a different doctor my Mother-in-law has seen for years. No argument. He says he's heard of this happening. He told me that he always asks questions and suggests removal if any of the more serious signs appear.
Mirena bad. I'm getting snipped if my marriage does not end. I'll store semen. A few vials to make sure. I don't want my wife to suffer anymore. She's not my wife anymore anyhow. I don't know what she is. She's become a monster. Hopefully after getting it removed next week, I'll see the wife I always loved staring back at me. What I see now.....I don't know.
Hi. I've had the IUD for over 7 years and have been having stress incontinence for just as long. It actually never crossed my mind until I spoke to my ob/gyn and she suggested an operation.
Did taking the IUD out help??
Wow, Jenny, I'm so sorry to hear about these problems. I almost considered a Mirena - it was being pushed by my OBGYN as a safe, easy thing. Reading these posts make me glad I held off!
The progesterone cream is a good suggestion. You may also want to check out Pomegranate Health's BalancePom which uses pomegranate extracts (fruit, seed oil and skin) to help restore hormonal balance. I've heard it's helped many women dealing with birth control induced hormonal issues:
Finally, you may want to try eleuthero which is a very gentle and effective adaptogen that helps the body recalibrate and deal with stress. Here's an article about it I just got today. If you look around, you'll find more about it's general adaptogenic properties:
Hi, I had Merina for 10 years with no problems apart from the intitial cramping which lasted a few months. However, I developed urge incontinence over a period of time which eventually required medication so I could function at work, etc. I was doing a search the other day for hair loss and Merina, and discovered that urge incontinence may be connected with Merina. As I am now 51 I decided to remove Merina, took no medication next day for my urge incontinence (which if I leave more than 4 hours the inevitable happens!) and my bladder feels normal again after all these years! I am keeping my fingers crossed as it's now been a week of normal bladder function, I really do feel human again!!!!!
I have had my Mirena for going on five years now. I experienced incontinence symptoms for about two years now, and they have varied as far as severity but never went completely away. For the last 3 months symptoms have increased gradually and at this point I can not jump or run or cough without, well you know. I have gained 25 pounds during that five years and am now on blood pressure meds, Prosac and wellbutrin both. Depression has always loomed over me so no telling if the symptoms are related to my Mirena or not I have been diagnosed HPV virus positive as "precancerous" My newest symptom is unusual odorous bleeding which has lasted for over a week now, and tonight I have been experiencing a twitching type feeling in the resident area. Needless to say I am scheduling an appointment first thing tomorrow and am hoping for the best but expecting the worst.
On the upside,
To All Women confused about IUD symptoms,
I feel your pain! This is my first post to a forum of any kind. It is so important that others know they are not alone.
Urinary Stress Incontinence is not OK. Wearing a pad everyday is not OK. Soaking through them after running 2 miles is not OK, especially if my bladder already seemed empty. Definitely not OK if there is any alternative. I did experience stress incontinence after my 7 pound son was born, the first time in my life. After 2 months of physical therapy, it was 90% better. I got the IUD when my son was 8 months old, 3 months later, I could not take it any more. Unquestionably, this device brought incontinence back, worse than ever. My doctor went through a lengthy explanation of why it could not be the IUD. I wavered, and kept it 4 more days. Terrible. It had to go.
The day after it was removed, I noticed improvement on a 5 mile run. MINIMAL leaking now, 10 days later!!! Amazing. Plus my moods are in check, another side effect for me.
Ladies, trust yourselves. We deserve to feel amazing, and to be the best versions of ourselves. Wishing health, hope, and healing to all who come across this post.
I've had my Mirena for 13 months. I am very moody, depressed and get angry very quickly. I've scheduled to have it removed in the morning. When I explained my symptoms to my doctor's assistant, she said she had never heard of such side effects of this and that it would NOT cause my hormones to be out of balance. I'm wondering if I should have blood work done to check hormone levels. Is anyone knowledgeable about this?
The WHOLE purpose of hormonal birth control is to upset your hormonal balance! BC attempts to prevent ovulation, so it suppresses normal estrogen and progesterone production in your body. It also alters levels of FSH, and many, many others. It is complete ingorance to think that BC would not cause a hormonal imbalance!
Good luck on the removal, it can take awhile afterward to get back to normal. Many women tend to have a "mood crash" about 10-14 days post-removal and it lasts for a couple of weeks, but slowly gets better.
Why do they act like I'm the only one with these symptoms, mood swings, etc.? She said it would NOT cause anything like that; that it was such a small dosage and it is localized. She said I was the ONLY person she had heard that from. I live in Houston, a big city, so you'd think they'd heard of this before.
I got mine out today!! The nurses totally understood and said they have heard of this happening often before with Mirena. Beats the heck outta me how the doc could be so positive about it. He sounded more like a pharmaceutical rep for Mirena than my doctor. The nurse practioners were more helpful and sympathetic!
I live near Dallas,TX. Before I had the Mirena IUD put in I called my pcp to tell them about something else I need a prescription for and I told the nurse in that office I was getting the Mirena IUD put in and she totally freaked me out saying that was so old fashioned and couldn't beleive I was doing that.
I told my gyno what she said before he put in the IUD and he said oh she is just ignorant about Mirena and that I would not have any problems at all. Like I said earlier he sounded like a dang commercial for Mirena...do they get something from the pharmecuetical companies? Am I just that dense?
YEt when I called my gyno yesterday to talk to the nurse she was not surprised at all that I wanted this stupid thing out...I mean that stupid thing...like I mentioned in an earlier post I got mine out today!!!!
I hope I'll be ok now!
Does anyone know anything about Loestrin24Fe birth control pills? They gave me 3 samples packs to try. Said for me ck back in a few months let them know how I'm doing with these.
I live in The Woodlands, Tx. Like I said, mine was removed this morning and he said there was NO way it would cause those type of side effects and he suggested I take Lexapro, an antidepressant, which is NOT an option for me. I don't believe in that.
Maybe they get something back for selling the Mirena IUDs?? I don't know.
Let me know if you see a difference. Here's my direct email. email@example.com. I'm so glad I'm not the only one that feels this way.
I'm having mine removed on Wednesday, feeling hormonal throughout the whole month and just want to feel normal again. In a houseful of men (fiancée, two sons and stepson) who don't understand how I feel, I'm just accused of being moany and horrible!! I really want to feel normal again!
I am really worried about this "MOOD CRASH" you mentioned earlier after having that thing removed.
my poooooooor hubby...I can see the scenario now: "Oh honey watch out for the mood crash I may have...thanks to that dang IUD I had put in so we could have sex to our hearts content without getting pregnant our marriage may have to suffer a little longer for it...geeeeeeeesh"
hope he can hold out a little longer for that...lol!
I had mine removed this morning. I talked to the doctor and he said he'd never heard of these symptoms before and that it wouldn't cause that. He suggested I take Lexapro, which is an antidepressant. I've never taken anything like that and don't want to become dependent on it.
Hopefully the removal of the IUD will help. They make me feel like I'm making this up or that it's normal to feel this way because of the ages of my children, 3 1/2 and 14 months, and because my husband travels all the time. I really don't think it's normal to feel the way I do.
Mood crash?!?!?! Arrrgghh please say it isn't so in every case. Why such a crash...and how do you mean? I don't want to fight with my hubby anymore...the poor guy has suffered enough...he is such a good man too!! It may be all in my head but I swear I feel better already!!
I got mine out this morning. Nurse practioner did it...especially after I told her how I was feeling.
It's not a "serious" mood crash, almost certainly not worse than with the darned thing in, but there tends to be a trend when you have it removed. Usually the first week you feel GREAT and lose between 2-5 pounds, the second week you still feel better at first, but about day 10 you can get very low and snippy. No energy, bad mood, start thinking "This is how I felt with it IN, so it MUST NOT have been the Mirena". Stick with it, within a week or so of hitting this "mood crash" you start to feel better again.
hi there, i have had Mirena three months now. Boy what an experience, after reading your letter i feel so much better. I really thought that because i am about to turn the big 40 that it was just that. Having had it to stop heavy bleeding which has been fanatastic. BUT my mood swings MY SO lack of libido and weight gain are undescibable. I am off to the doctor in the morning to get it removed. BRING BACK THE OLE ME.
I have had my IUD in for about 14 months and have experienced all of the same symptoms. I thought I was alone. My husband has insisted that I take it out ASAP and I have an appt next week to have it removed.
Thank you all so much for sharing your stories. I am sitting here in tears. I have had the Mirena for almost two years, and suffered from increased migraines, depression, weight gain (which NOTHING I do -- even starving myself -- will take off), quickness to anger, and even hair loss. I asked my doctor to remove it nine months ago, and he told me that the hormone levels in Mirena were so low that it could not possibly be causing my problems and put me on Prozac instead. Needless to say, the antidepressent has done nothing for me, and I felt like I was losing my mind.
Why don't the doctors have the information that is being shared here? I guess the pharm. corps. are really that powerful. It just makes me so sad that my doctor, who supposedly cares for women, did not listen to me.
I am calling first thing in the morning to make an appointment to get this THING removed. Maybe my marriage and family can get some sort of normalcy back. Thank you all again --
after the "crash", how long does it take to get back on track mentally? Like everyone else I feel like I am losing my mind and the lack of control over my mood and panic attacks and am anxious to get this thing out and get normal. I have been put on 3 different anti depressants with no real cure to the panic attacks and just want to be back to my old self. Does anyone know how long it takes?
I'm so glad to find these postings. I've been feeling like i've been losing my mind! I'm still debating with myself whether or not the IUD mirena is to blame or something else. Ever since I had gotten pregnant w/ my daughter I've never been the same. At the time of pregnancy I had to take progesterone shots once a week to insure that I didn't have her prematurely and I was at high risk. Those shots messed w/ my head. I was teary, moody, depressed, etc. At my 6 week check up I had the mirena put in b/c It seemed like the easiest birth control that was worry free. I do love that part but I feel like i'm so on edge, worry, moody, everything.......I don't know what to do about it. I've tried anti depressants too. They didn't seem to do any good but i'm terrible about remembering to take a pill! I've thought for the longest time I've got some kind of hormone imbalance but can't seem to get anyone to listen to me. I'm not in menopause so i'm just crazy!? I don't know. I'm at a loss but it's been 2 years since my duaghter was born and I feel like i'm not the same person. I hate that! I don't know if mirena is to blame or not but i'm tired of feeling like i'm going crazy and don't even know who I am anymore! If anyone has advice/answers I'd love to hear. I'm desperate at this point!!
Hello, and welcome!
My first question to you would be about the progesterone shots. Are they synthetic, or bio-identical? It sounds like you started off with either low progesterone or estrogen dominance. Putting in the Mirena probably just added fuel to the fire. The synthetic progestin in mirena seems to cause us to stop making our own natural hormone, (by replacing it, as well as causing us not to ovulate-the primary source for progesterone) so if the shots you were taking to stay pregnant was synthetic as well.....double whammy.
Most docs deny the hormonal imbalance-but if you look up your symptoms, they are all indicative of hormones. the problem is, synthetic hormones are bad-read up about HRT. The pharm co's can't make money off hormonal imbalance being a viable condition, cause their drugs are dangerous! just watch-as soon as they can figure out a way to capitalize on this, doc's will be all over it. "prediction by Jill" lol!
I tried anti-depressants, and all they did was make me stupid and dull...cause I didnt need them!
You are not crazy.....and you are not alone!
I would recommend you go to the end of the posting for future messages-not everyone sees them chronologically, if you post under older threads you will not get as many responses.
Hang in there and Peace to you, Jill
OMG I just called my mother this morning crying my eyes out because I didn't understand what I was going through. I am experiencing the most uncontrollable mood swings and crying. My boyfriend and I have been arguing a lot lately and he kept asking me what is wrong with me and I never have an answer. My mother told me that she experienced these things and was diagnosed as someone with a hormone imbalance. She told me to look up Mirena and I found this page. I sincerely thank all of you for sharing your stories because I am going to get Mirena removed ASAP. I can't take this anymore I hope they start giving people correct information about Mirena and it's major side effect. HORMONE IMBALANCE!!! It can tear down a home.
I can't believe there are so many women that experience hormonal imbalances with Mirena and it's not listed as a side-effect. But I'm so glad to see it's not just me! The weight gain, the fury, the sleeplessness... What worries me more is the ladies that said the doctors don't want to hear that it's the Mirena. I want to go see my doctor for help, but if he doesn't believe that it can be the Mirena, what then?
I had my first Mirena in for the full 5 years and about 3 months ago had a new one put in. I did even start considering the Mirena to be the cause of my problems until about 3 months before I had changed. Now I wish I would have just had it removed. I've gained 20 pounds total since january (new mirena inserted in june) my skin is dry, I have mood swings, i cry at the drop of a hat, and my sex life could almost be non exsistant. I'm really considering getting this thing out and just having my tubes tied. I need to get this weight off and get my life back to normal. I miss my sexua| activity! I really did enjoy it but I just can't get in the mood anymore. My body is digusting and I can't stand for anyone to see me naked. I am happily married and have been with the same man for 4 years so it makes it difficult on my hubby as he was use to a more active sex life with me. I've had my TSH level tested about 2 months ago and I think it was on the higher end of normal. Not to mention the unwanted hair growing on my chin, chest and around my nipples. I'm waiting on a lab slip from my doc to test all levels in my body to see if there is more going on before I jump to have it taken out.
I am in tears, thank you guys for sharing. I have had my mirena for a little over a year and have never had such issues in my life! Depression, sudden anger, mood swings, crying for no reason at all, super emotional and getting my feelings hurt so easy. My marriage is on the rocks because of this. My poor husband has been dealing with a monster. I have felt so alone in all this. I've held most of my sadness in so no one thinks I'm crazy and tries to put me on meds. All my life I have been such a happy person and nothing usually bothers me. I am so thankful I came across this forum. My IUD is going to be removed next week. Here's to happiness, joy, laughter and better moods!! Thank yall again for sharing your stories.
I am a 32 yr old wife & mother of 3. My husband thinks ive gone Over the Coo Coo Nest when i explain my symptoms. However, I know what im feeling is 100% FACT! I have had the Mirena for 4 yrs in April. After i had my last child. Terrible head aches, mood swings, very little patents<~~(SOOO NOT ME)Cry baby(<~~seriously) My own hubby has told me that I have changed. But has very little understanding of how the IUD works. How it affects hormone levels. I sometimes wake in night sweats, flip 0 to 100 FAAAAAST smh.I explained to my OBGYN how i was feeling. She told me mood swings were temp. Perscribed me Depression pills. I NEVER TOOK EVEN 1 PILL. Instead i have been saving my money to have this burden REMOVED! It will cost me $270 they DONT JUST REMOVE IT. I live in SOUTH CAROLINA, so to the young lady in TEXAS ~~~>>I THINK THEIR ALL IN IT TOGETHER! Just tryna MAKE SOME MONEY NO MATTER THE EFFECTS. I ALSO HEARD THIS MIRENA COULD CAUSE CANCER. Im ready to go back to NORMAL I MISS ME BEING ME~so does my husband.
Ever since I had my Mirena removed I either sleep really deep with vivid and scary dreams (which I have never done before)or I have insominia. The only med's I am on are synthyriod and I take a water pill when I am on my period to help my vertigo I take vitamins also.
ever since the 11th day post removal, i sleep very deep. i can sleep 6 hours and wake up refreshed. i had bad insomnia with mirena. apparently bc pills also gave me side effects too, just not as bad as mirena. my dreams seem more real now.
I had mirena for 16 months my insomnia started a month after mirena and I always had spotting every day , insomnia got worse over time so did the severe anxiety I suffered so badly could not take care of anything started closing my doors and crying one and half year later someone told me it might be mirena I had it removed next day I felt better couple of days later for one day it's been a struggle still every night I pray to go to sleep
One year after the removal now I still have the insomnia not as bad as it was. I can only sleep some nights of the week For 5 hours
I still can not plan anything and have to stop everything I am doing by 7 pm if it I absolutely can't sleep anxiety feelings come of and on with no rhyme or reason
If I talk for more than 10 min with anyone that day I can't sleep if I watch a movie I cannot sleep
It's like I can not do anything I want to do
Mirena totally wrecked my life
Any suggestions to improve insomnia ?
I tried everything from otc sleep meds to prescription none of them helped I tired massages etc also
I hope to sleep all days of the week and be back myself
I heard about dr fein in Dallas Texas about checking testosterone levels and treating as mirena depletes testosterone
Any one had experience there ?
I am very worried and anxious and was wondering if any one out there is going through this..I had mirena inserted at my 6 week post partum check-up. After 5 months of lots of, headaches, dry , red eyes, acne, weight gain, and some very heavy bleeding I decided to get the mirena removed..enough was enough. Low and behold when they went to remove the mirena the strings were nowhere to be found. 2 doctors tried and then they wheeled me into the ultasound room to see if they could locate the IUD that way.....that was my first glimpse of my baby's heartbeat.... I was already 8 weeks and 3 days pregnant. Needless to say, I was shocked, but maternal instincts kicked into action instantly...all I want to do is protect this baby. The doctors agred that my best bet was to remove the IUD (the strings are entirely up in the uterus) by means of hysteroscopy. Unfortunately, during the hysteroscopy, they found that the IUD was enveloped in a large blood clot (probably caused by the iUD) and positioned above the gestational sac. It was too risky to pull it out. Now here I sit with my poor baby trapped inside with this monster they call Mirena. I am now in danger of miscarriage, (heavy percentage even in second trimester), preterm labor and premature birth, septic infection and the possibility of congenital anomolies even if my baby makes it to full term..Even so, I still have a chance of having a healthy, normal baby and I try and hold on to that. There is almost no info out there available on women who carry a baby full term with Mirena in place (which only adds to my anxiety) and I feel pretty alone...The doctor who placed the IUD seems hopeful and tries to re-assure me, but I got the distinct feeling from the doctor who tried the hysteroscopy that the situation is more grim. I am now almost 11 weeks and these days are the longest of my life...Every day seems an eternity as I wait for something bad to happen. I do accept that almost all contaceptive products have a failure rate, but unlike Mirena they are not a danger to both mother and child when they fail. This product should be pulled from the market...it is not right to be put in this position. Please....if there's anyone out there who knows anything about this...please respond.
hi, i have also just got the mirena inserted, however i didnt really get told how long it takes til it takes affect. I was having sexual intercourse before it may have taken affect, and without any other form of contraception. Anyways what i am getting at, is when you found out you were pregnant was it only from having it removed, i am trying to understand with it in place how you can tell your pregnant and if it shows up positive on a urine test or not. I had a really light 2 day period on the time when my period would be due, which ive been told can happen, but since then have had one bout of severe cramping and pressure in my pelvis, chills nauseas all the time, so im worried about pregnancy or eptopic pregnancy.I went to the doc and they reckon it might have been a tract infection but werent sure, it wasnt even showing properly on the test, but a urine pregnancy test didnt show either, but it could be too early im not really sure. I know this isnt really answering your question, its just your the only person that has written about getting pregnant with it in place. The doctor told me my strings are still in place, but im worried about the possibility that something happened before i got it in, as the same thing nearly happened with my son
any info you could give me would really help, i would like to keep in touch to see how it goes for you.
i feel like i have something off to the right hand side of my belly area that feels strange, im not sure if it could be this or something totaly unrelated. The lower of my back can hurt or laying on it pressure wise. I get this pinching pain in this spot. I know this doesnt happen earlier on in pregnancy hence why im worried something may have grown out of place, but i cant figure out what it could be and am curious to know what symtoms you had and finding out etc. What about periods while you had it in? I dont even know if urine tests would show up properly if you have it in or something like eptopic happening.
Ive had two babies and heaps of complications with the birth of my daughter, so hopefully it will get better for you, like it did for me. I didnt have anything inserted for either child but know the pains and joys of birth.
please take care of yourself and get plenty of rest and support, i wish you all the best if you dont get back to me, if you do meet your little one you will never look back as they are the best thing ever! i had 2 in one year and not twins so this says alot..
I had the Mirena in place for almost 4 months and still got pregnant. I had no idea I was pregnant, I only knew I was bleeding really irregularly for almost the entire time. I expected the irregular bleeding the first 3 months, but the bleeding got heavier, especially in the last 6 weeks. I couldn't even guess as to when by period was because it literallly seemed like I was haveing it 24/7. There was probably a break of about 3-4 weeks in February that I didn't have bleeding and I suspect that is close to when I actualy got pregnant. It was because of all the bleeding and side effects of that I decided to get it removed. I never suspected pregnancy for a minute. The ultrasound was done to locate the Mirena after my doctor couldn't find the strings to remove it. That is how I found out I was pregnant...I saw it on the ultrasound machine..it's little heart was beating away...
I am now almost 11 weeks pregnant and my Mirena was put in it September and remains there still (much to my dismay). My biggest worry at this point is the health of my baby. With all the progesterone in my system, no one can tell me that it won't affect the baby...especially if it's a girl.
My advice to you is to go in and get checked again. They should be able to see something on ultrasound by now if you are pregnant, if it's ectopic, or even if the IUD is imbedded or causing havoc to your uterus. If it doesnt' feel right, you've have got to trust you're instincts...I wish I had listened to mine earlier..Maybe they would have been able to remove the Mirena if I found out earlier.. Good luck and let me know how it goes..
anxious - i am so sorry you are dealing with a pregnancy with the mirena still inside of you. have you tried reaching out to any specialists in other areas? i don't know where to start, but maybe a top notch hospital might have a doctor that would take your case on. i'd be begging at this point.
i thought that some women took progesterone shots while pregnant (ivf mommies) in the beginning so maybe it's not *too* bad at first.
i just can't imagine how you are feeling and have been thinking about you. i saw your earlier post that got lost like all of the others. maybe the blood clot it is surrounded in is absorbing some of the hormones, one can hope.
i wish you the best of luck and hope you can find someone who can give you excellent care. take care of yourself.
Thanks for your reply. I actually had gone to Rochester Mayo Clinic for the last attempt to remove the IUD. I think the doctors there gave it a valliant effort, but just could go no further because they thought that dragging the blood clot/IUD out would take the baby with it. I am learning to live with the situation I am faced with, but just so worried about the baby all the time. The bleeding has not stopped and every time I pass a clot, I worry.
I am 11 weeks now and simply hoping and praying for the best.
Thanks for your kind wishes...
Not sure if you are looking for answers still but i am. I have the IUD and was having semi normal periods until i think last month and this month so i took a test here at home and i took two of them and both came up positive. I am worried what will happen with the IUD in me and i am hopeing to get in to the dr tomorrow so something will be done. Just by chance where did you get the IUD done at? I am in Fort Rucker, AL
i live about 45 minutes away from you. im sorry that your iud failed in this way. i only had mine for three months before it came out. i got pregnant exactly four weeks later. i miscarried and i know that the hormones left over from the mirena are the reason why. i sicnerely hope that you can find a dr who will take it out for you asap and that there are no problems in the process. if you need someone to talk to, here is a good place. you can also email me if you like and i will listen as well. im assuming you have tricare? i dont, however, i do know that it can be a pain to get in to see dr's because of stipulations that tricare require. my cousin has tricare and she had an appointment to see the dr a couple weeks ago, got there and was told she couldnt because tricare said she lived in virginia, which she has never lived in virginia. her husband does, but she never has. so she had to fight with them in order to get everything straightened out so she could start the process to get hers taken out as well. we had side effects from it, but for birth control it worked great. for a few different reasons. i have had pelvic pain since mine about two weeks before mine came out. now im on a waiting game to see if it will go away in the next few months, if not i have to get a laporoscopy done to see what is wrong, and depending on what is found, i will face a possible hystorectomy. im only 25, im not ready for the fact that i will never be able to have another child. of course my husband had a vasectomy three months ago, but you never know. im also supposed to be on birth control for a few reasons, one of which is to get my periods under control so that maybe that would help the pain. my dr thinks that if i have a few periods then the pain will go away. after my husband is declared infertile, ill start it, but not before. some dr's make out that this is the best birth control ever and that there are no side effects, no problems, no possible way to get pregnant while using. boy, are they wrong. im glad mine is not like that.
but like i said, if you ever need anyone to talk to, ill be there.
I really thought that I should reply to your message because I am having the same symptoms as you! I actually just had a baby back in March. I had my Mirena inserted in April at my six weeks checkup. I have been bleeding pretty much ever since I got it. These past few days have been the only days that I really haven't been bleeding. I'm really scared that I'm pregnant again. I don't know what to do about it. I really think that I should take a test, but then again what if its too soon and it doesn't show up? I actually missed my 2 month checkup for it because I thought I no longer had insurance but I recently just found out that I do so should I call my doctor and get checked out?! I'm about to be 19 and I'm really not ready for another kid but if I am pregnant I hope that my baby is going to be okay. (By the way I have had menstrual like cramps and have been puking....are those signs?)
My heart goes out to you, and what you are going through. Based on the hideous side effects I have seen posted here in healthy, adult females, I think I would also be extremely nervous about giving birth to a baby exposed to the Mirena in utero. In this case, has the doctor suggested you have a specialist contact Berlex to determine what the suggested course of action is when pregnancy occurs with a Mirena in place? I would definitely want two or three opinions about what to do, as it would be incredibly difficult for everyone involved, most especially the fetus, if there were very serious birth defects as a result of this obviously highly toxic birth control.
You need to go get a second opinion, one that is honest and true. I had a similar thing happen, but I caught it at 1 month. Yes, for all those that have asked, IUD pregnancies do show up on take home pregnancy tests.
My obgyn was very honest with me and said prior to getting the Mirena that there was a chance of getting pregnant, but most likely it would be a nonviable pregnancy. She has always been upfront with me (and she is a supporter of the Mirena). I made the choice to get a DNC. It was a difficult choice, but I already had a previous baby that I needed to take care of and decided that I needed to not take any risks that although brutal and the toughest of MY LIFE, I could somehow avoid.
It was too important for my health and and future pregnancies to hold onto something that could kill me. Remember that this is only month 2 and that as you become more pregnant, the pressure on the foreign body (the Mirena) can tear your uterean wall and the cyst can take the blood away from your unborn baby.
I know this is a hard choice to make, but you need all the facts. Do what is best for you. I am so sorry we have all had to become lab test for this form of birth control, but at least we are able to talk about it. Good luck.
Hey I was just reading your story..I have had my iud almost two years and i am very worried i am pregnant!! I was just curious on how your pregnancy went or has bene going..I see you probably have had him/or her by now..email me back im very curious to see if everything was okay! Thanks.Morgan
I know it was September 2007 when you posted...but how did your situation turn out? I have had my IUD for 4 years...and I feel like I am pregnant...all of the symptoms. I have two children and I know what it feels like. Are you pregnant? Did you ever start? I am 2 weeks late, morning sickness, pains...sometimes severe...in my lower abdomen.
I have been trying to find the user by the name of anxious1 who posted back in 2007 about being pregnant with and IUD inserted and I came across your message. Where you infact pregnant I would like for you to respond back. I've had my IUD inserted 15 months ago after my second child was born. This will be baby #3 and with the IUD still inserted I want to talk with someone who has experienced this. I am around 5 weeks. My personal email is firstname.lastname@example.org please email me. If you have any advice or know someone else who has experienced this please let me know. Thank You and God Bless you and your family.
I have the mirena, I too had it put in after 6 weeks of giving birth, and I had alot of problems rigth away, although, my OB is very good and fixed the strings from poking me, and my husband. I think I might be pregnant again?! And I came on here to see what others thought too. Because I was for sure that I couldn't get pregnant with the mirena in. But I haven't seen my OB in almost 7 or 8 months, so I couldn't say on where or how my mirena is positioned. But I too have thought about it moving/repositioning itself. I'm so sorry to hear about your mishap there. I think I might sched. an appt. soon. I wanted to take a preg. test but I'm scared. LOL...We only wanted one child, but it'll be ok if we have 2. HEHE. How was your symptoms as far as noticing them?
I wanted to talk to you and see if this was the same thing im going through. I gave birth on Aug 3 2007. I got my Mirena put it in Oct 7. Just recently a few months ago I was getting this pinching feeling down there, if i walked moved sat a certain way. I went in and my doctor just cut the string. He told me if this happened again he'd have to take it out because the string was too short. Now, today a few months later I go in for a follow up and the doctor says he cant find the string, never mind the actually Mirena. Hes having me go for a ultrasound to see where the mirena is, and if its still in place..... Im so scared that this IUD didnt work, its not in place and I may be pregnant. First, I wanted to ask you. when you went in for your appointment, did they do a pregnany test. they did for me and it came back negative. so i was wondering, because you had said you were getting it removed and didnt think you were pregnant and then your 8 weeks. second, I was wondering what they did when they found out that it was lodged. as my doctor thinks it is. PLEASE write back as soon as possible. Thanks!
I saw your message, and I just had to respond. I have Mirena, and I got it after I gave birth to my daughter in November 07. My doctor actually recommended this deue to miscarriage problems. I had this put in beginning of Jan 08, as they made me wait til after my 6 week check-up. Well long story short, I still have it. For the past 2 weeks or so, I have been feeling a bit under the weather if you want to call it that.. I am having what I would call a non stop kinda crampy feeling in my pelvic area, and my boobs hurt. My entire mouth hurts, and I have no idea why. My first thought was Im pregnant. I bought a pregnancy test, but it came out negative. I am still feeling like this, and I am just wondering if you are maybe feeling the same. I dont want to waste a trip to the doctor, but I dont want to ignore what im feeling at the same time. Please let me know!!
I tested positive with a home pregnancy test yesterday, and am seeing my doctor this afternoon. I've had Mirena since February 2008, six weeks after the birth of my daughter.
I understand there is a high risk for ectopic pregnancy, and for complications if the Mirena remains in the uterus with the developing baby.
I'm hoping that the original poster may respond with a happy ending to her story, or anyone else that has experienced a pregnancy with the Mirena.
After my last posting, my doctor confirmed that I was 7 weeks pregnant, with the Mirena still in place.
At 8 weeks, I had another ultrasound to determine if the doctor could remove the Mirena without causing a miscarriage, but at that time there was no fetal heartbeat. I had miscarried somewhere between the 7th and 8th week.
I had the Mirena removed- my doctor does not recommend that I use it again, since it already failed once. My husband is scheduled for a vasectomy.
Kelle, I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how difficult this is for you.
I wanted to let you know many women will not see your posts if you are responding to an old thread. Most view the forum in a non-chronological form, so if you ever have concerns, go to the end of the forum (page 111 right now) and post there.
Please take care of yourself, and know you are in my prayers.
I'm in a confused state right now. I had a scare back in August. I had a test show positive while my IUD was in place. Had blood work done, but it was only a couple points saying I was pregnant. It was too early for an U/S and they suspected it was a chemical. I had a second beta done and it was negative. My doctor told me the test every month to make sure it doesn't happen again since I haven't bleed since April 2009. Now its Oct. 2009 and yesterday I took a $1 test from Dollar General. It showed a faint positive! I couldn't wait and took one more thinking it was a fluke and that one also was a faint positive. I'm not sure if its the tests, but having two in a row doesn't seem normal.
I also chart my BBT to see when I might have ovulated since I don't get a MP. Yesterday there was a dip in temps, cramping like heck, hips hurting and lower back pain. Have any of you felt this even with not being pregnant? I have a collapsed and tilted uterus and not sure if the IUD fits right. Like I said, I haven't had an U/S since getting this IUD.
I'm a mother of 4 and know what a pregnancy feels like and my baby is just 8 months old. I'm not sure what to do or if anyone would respond to this, but I'm searching for help!
I posted a picture on Canyouseealine.com
Its listed until Dollar Tree Tests. Please have a look and see what you think.
if you dont mind me asking what was the outcome of your pregnancy... so far I am 10 weeks and everything is ok but my other friends were able to have their mirena removed... I am the only one that still has it in because of the same reason yours couldnt be removed... I wish there was more information on live births with mirena still in place.
Hey I saw this while searching the same thing you were years ago... I just found out I am pregnant and I have been on the Mirena for almost 2yrs. I got on the mirena to protect from this happening but now that it is I want to do everything I can to protect my baby...I am terrified about the babys health. Did you end up having that baby and is he/she ok? I am so sorry if the pregnancy didnt last and if this is a bad subject but I could really use your help! I know you said you were keeping the IUD in and hoping to make it to your due date. Did you? I had a feeling I was pregnant last 8 days but thought of no cant be...well then I had a dream I was and BAM bought a test and to my surprise I sure am. I am going to get an ultrasound today. No idea if its in my tube, if the IUD is still in place, or what my situation is. I hope you are doing well. I hope to hear from you. Thanks
I wish I had known all of the before I let the doctor talk me into getting the Mirena. I just found out I'm pregnant and the doctor ordered a lab and once she gets the results she'll set me up with a visit. I'm in shock. I am 42 and completely done having children and I feel guilty that I cried when I found out and that my first thought was to get rid of it. I definitely FELT pregnant. All of the normal symptoms. But because I have the mirena I tried to live in denial for about a month. I have no idea what I'm going to do, but first I have to find out WHERE it is. I'm glad all of you are on here. I don't feel so alone.
I have had the Mirena IUD in for almost 5 years and had already decided I would get another when the time came. However, I "felt" pregnant for the last week or so... pregnancy test was positive. I, too, am in my 40's and was shocked and devastated to find I was with child. I chose the Mirena because we were done building our family (4 kiddos) and I have health issues that needed tending to. After the shock of finding out I was pregnant, my mothering instincts kicked in and I began a furious search for information and providers to help me make the decisions that would best benefit the health of my baby. The Mirena was removed post-haste but the waiting game began. I was told I had a 50% chance of miscarrying due to the IUD being removed, but it was safer than leaving it in at this time. I was told yesterday that my HCG levels are dropping. I cannot express the anguish I feel. It may not have been planned, but it was already loved. Never, ever, have I felt so helpless, so empty.
This is unfortunate, and this is my opinion on the situation as we are all entitiled to one. The Mirena is intended for women who do not want to conceive and is worrisome that we still can, sure the Dr. Said there might be a slight possibility but I never imagined it could carry on to 11 wks. I`ve had mine since 2009 & I got the Mirena because I do not like babies, there just not for me. I aksed my Dr. If I could get my tubs tied but he said I am to young for that so for now this is my only option. Now for those who are complaining that your worried about a miscarriage are just plain annoying youre doctor tells you all the side effects and risks before insert. They say specifacally that a pregnancy may occure but greatly fail due to Mirena, so if you all wanted another baby or feel bad about being pregnant while on Mirena and the chance of survival is close to none, sorry to say this but this is what you signed up for. To say you wish Mirena was taken out of the mareket is way to extreme and some of us like this option. I hope I am never in this unfortunate situation because I would be so mad at the fact that I am pregnant... good thing I ran into this, making appt asap to get mine checked up.
I have 2 children 3 and 4 years old. I had Mirena since the birth of my second child, about 3 years ago. Three weeks ago I started spotting but I though that it was not a big deal since the spotting is usual with Mirena. Couple of weeks ago I started to feel weak and light headed but I still though this symptoms were due to bleeding. About 10 days ago bleeding got worse and I started to worry so I got home pregnancy tests both came out positive. The ultrasound showed healthy heartbeat of the baby but there is a blood clot right next to the placenta. The doctor said that the IUD is too close to the baby and said that the best bet is to leave the IUD. This week was better, spotting got brown and the doctor said that this was a good sign. Today I took my children to the park, when I came back bleeding came back. I can not describe how much worry the situation is causing me, I can not sleep and just pray and cry all the time. I constantly feeling myself and on the alert. My husband and I want this baby very much. I can not believe that we are that 1% out of 99 that have to experience this. Please post, reading and posting gives me hope.
Here is my brief story outlined in a list! I would love to hear what others may have experienced

Wow. I've struggled with #1-9 at various times over the last year since I've had the Mirena removed. I started having problems after it had been in for 1 1/2 years. I had it placed when my baby was 10 months old, however, so a little later than you. I had a brain and optic nerve MRI. Both normal. I feel better after a year since having it out, but still struggling mostly with tremors, weakness in my arms and legs (worse on the rt. side), heavy legs, vision distortio, slight dizziness (it was vertigo at first so this much better and doesn't bother me too much), occasional twitching (most recently my eye lid twitching horribly for a month. Now it has stopped.
Get the IUD out and start recovering! Glad you've joined us!
I hope you are doing ok and have continued to feel better. Thank you for sharing you symptoms.

Auto immune tests
have all come back clear, but I know something is still wrong.
Having nerve and muscle tests on the 15th
Thats my Mirena story told a concisely as I can and i have probably missed some symptoms. This site is amazing and you will find it an absolute godsend through your recovery. Take it easy on yourself. This can be a slow process, so give yourself time.
November 2009 -son is born
January 2010- IUD inserted
end of OCt. 2010 when I started weaning my son I noticed a numb spot would come off and on in the middle of my back, like someone had applied icy hot. I also had a day of vertigo.
since then, I have experienced the following:
1. facial numbness and tingling, more on the right side around the ear, but also other parts of my face and lip.
2. legs numb and tingly especially calves. More on the right side also.
3. restless leg feeling, especially at night. My leg feels tight and like it wants to twitch, but it doesn't
4. My body kind of jerks as I am falling asleep, like I am scaring awake.
5. stiffness in knees, particularly when I take a bath.
6. Numbness and tingling in arms and hands
7. dizziness and nausea -I feel like when I am pregnant or motion sick.(I am NOT pregnant)
8. throbbing/aching in legs, more in right leg
9. anxiety -probably due to the fear of having MS
I have had an MRI- it showed tiny spots, but the neurologist wasn't sure if they were normal for my brain or due to something else. The report said not diagnostic of MS, but early ms could not be excluded completely.
Blood work was all normal. I had a spinal tap, but the results will not be back until later this week. I am praying it is all normal and I do not have to head over to the MS forum. I have not had my Mirena out yet, but if this test is normal, I will.
Hope this helps you!
I am so thankful to have found you all. I have had so much anxiety that even thought ALL tests point to this not being MS it could be. But now that I know that others are out there with the same problems I feel so relieved. Trisha, I will be eager to hear what spinal says; I am confident it will say nothing!
My report said exactly the same thing...two tiny spots not diagnostic of MS, but early ms could not be excluded completely.
I am scheduled for an MRA tomorrow because I have an unusually large blood vessel in my head and I guess they are worried about aneurism (sp?).
Funny thing is, my facial numbness has disappeared in the couple of weeks that I have been making trips to the neurologist. Now, I spent Friday night in the ER having chest pain, for them to tell me it wasn't my heart, but my chest wall muscles spasming.
Gotta love Mirena!
What did your neurologist say about your MRI report? Did he think it could be normal for your brain? Did he encourage you to have a lumbar puncture (spinal tap)? I am so happy to hear someone else had something show on their MRI, but still not MS. I have been thinking I was doomed because mine showed something and everyone elses was clean. I am praying this is just the Mirena. There is a good chance I will have spinal tap results tomorrow. I will let you all know. PLease keep praying for normal results! I want this chapter in my life over!
My brain MRI said I have 15-20 tiny lesions on each side of my brain. My follow up with the neuro is Wed. The report said the pattern is not the usual for MS, but it can't be excluded. Could also be blood vessel problems. I think they will do more tests. . .I am 15 months post but Mirena was outside the womb so I got a 10x dose of progestin (according to the 1 medical journal I found on the subject-)Good luck on your results, fabteach, and welcome ashymae.
I haven't gone back for the revisit since the MRI since my doctor has cancelled out on me TWICE. I went to the hospital and picked up my own report. I'm supposed to go in next Wed. to see what the doc. says.
Hi- I know this is an old post- any updates on your results? How are you feeling now?? I am about 3 months post removal and still have symptoms. This has been the worst year ever. Any updates would be helpful. Xo allie
The side effects that everyone is experiencing, that they think is or is like MS, is not MS it is a bad side effect of levonorgestrel, a harmon that they use in your IUD/Mirena. If you are having these side effects, you should have it removed as soon as possible by a ob/gyn, not yourself, and do not let anyone talk you out of doing it, unless you want to have worst problems. You can look at the list of side effects caused by levonorgestrel on, http://www.drugs.com,
and put levonorgestrel in the search engine.
I just got my IUD out on friday and already feel much much better. It is almost like a year from absolute hell that is finally over. I cannot believe all of the MRI's and other tests I went through were, most likely, due to mirena
I am from Poland, and- any way, first sorry for all my mistakes and missunderstundies ;)- but I'm reading this forum and I start to scare! I have Mirena since 3 months and I feel worse and worse :( I saw many doctors- and nobody see anything bad, but I feel sick! Do you really think that there is a problem with MIrena?
In Poland all of doctors whom I know (gin) say that it is the best way and the most saftly from the other??
I will be really very happy when you will answer me!
All I know is that I never had visited an online health forum in my entire life until my health fell apart while I had the Mirena in. I am slowly getting better now that the Mirena is out. My Dr. also said the Mirena couldn't do this. Just about every one on this forum had a Dr. who said the Mirena could not to do this. But they are obviously wrong (the Drs.). Just keep reading, and you will start to see the truth.
I'm reading these posts and literally feeling like there might be hope in the future for me. I am having my Mirena out next Friday. My doctor says "It's been lost in your vagaina". Great.
I had my IUD put in in 2009 with very little side effects. I was thrilled that my periods were so light. I bragged about how great it was.
This summer has been living hell. I woke in the middle of the night to painless muscle twitching in my legs. Annoying, but I didn't think much of it. Now, in October, I have muscle twitching over my entire body, my leg and arm muscles are so weak I can barely walk or hold my hairdryer. I have had MRI's, xrays, bloodwork enough to fill the blood bank, Lyme disease testing, nerve testing, and seen 5 different doctors. I cry ALL the time. A mother of 2 (3 if you count my husband) I don't want to slow down, and this has literally immobilized me. At one point I thought I was having a seizure because the "buzzing" wouldn't stop. My joints are inflammed, and I hurt everywhere. I sleep, but wake up as if I haven't slept in days.
My doctor's response "You must have a virus". Thank you all for posting and making me feel as though there is hope on the way. I will keep you posted on my status after they rip this thing out of me!
I got my mirena inserted around april/may of last year and have been seeing ear/nose/throat specialists since september. I have beendiagnosed with acid reflux (but don't even feel it) and am having major problems with my mouth and throat. I have on 2 heavy doses of acid reflux medicines for 3 months and nothing has changed. It's hard to explain but its a constant pain that was never there before, its kind of like I always have a lump in the back of my throat. I am a medical mystery according to my doctors, but he keeps saying that he thinks he is missing something. It dawned on my husband and i that it all started beginning a few months after I got the IUD put in. I am (or at this point was) a very healthy 31 year old. Needless to say I scheduled an appointment for wed to get this thing out. I never thought that having something inserted in my uterus could cause this many problems in my body, but it has to be. I went through so many blood tests and ruled out everything else they could think of, but it seems it comes down to my hormones being all out of sync.
Has anyone else had such strange side effects? It has ruled my life for the past 6 months and it has been misserable. Hopefully getting the IUD removed will help me somehow.
I had similar problems with my throat while having the Mirena. I was also diagnosed with reflux but never believed that was the problem. The ENT specialist just didn't know what else to call it. Several months on meds didn't help me either. Throat problems like yours can be attributed to an autoimmune response from the IUD, probably from the silicone it's made of. The Mirena has been associated with all kinds of autoimmune symptoms/diseases. I'm glad you're getting it removed. Hopefully your body will recognize the foreign body is gone and give up the attack. Be patient...it may take time.
I had my Mirena in a year before I noticed the throat problem. It felt like the lump you are discussing, but it was also like I couldnt get a deep breath at all. Went to the throat specialist and the gastrointerologist...no one figured anything out. When I got the Mirena removed, I no longer had the problem breathing, but the acid kicked up and I could actually taste it in my throat.
I think it is different for everyone since our hormones are all trying to regulate. Hopefully this Mirena hell will be over one day.
I had the same problem and suffer from reflux abouth 3 years. Never relate this problem with mirena, but the first thing I notice right after removing Mirena is that I didn't need to take my acid reflux pills any longer. Hope you feel better soon.
I felt like my throat was closing and that was one of the reasons for removal. Before I had it removed I also felt a lot of fullness in my ear and popping. The throat stuff has gone away, but the ear problems keep repeating. I also feel a fullness in my neck and have a small lymph node that has been popped out on the side of my neck for months now. They all say it's nothing. But hard to believe when you know you don't feel normal.
Thank you to all of you that replied. I can't believe it took me this long to figure this out...i just hope it is the cause. One thing I forgot about was that the only bloodwork that came back wacky dealt with the autoimmune but the doctors all said it wsn't related...
how soon after you got your mirena's removed did you start to feel relief. I have been patient for 6 months, so I guess I can handle anything.
Thanks again, and I am glad I am not crazy!
I am 15 months post, and I still sometimes have a hard time swallowing. My tests for autoimmune also came back "hinky", but nothing she could pinpoint. that's why she gave me the diagnosis of drug induced lupus.
Some of the symptoms I had cleared up within a couple days, or DRAMATICALLY improved. Others, mainly the fatigue and mild anxiety are still lingering. Like L said, if I look back to where I was a year ago, I feel great. If I look back to pre-mirena, not so great, BUT I am 6 years older (42), very stressed out, in the middle of a gloomy gloomy winter, and in menopause. I dont know how much those things play into it. the stress is probably the kicker.
I had mine in for almost the full 5. I think for many of the women who did not have it in so long the symptoms clear up quicker.....hang in there!
I had the Mirena in for just shy of 2 years, and I too had/have the same symptoms. I have a swollen lymph node on my neck, and I am also having issues with acid reflux (never had issues with digestion before). I had Mirena removed almost a week ago, but I don't feel that much has changrd. I have digestion issues, anxiety, insomnia, night sweats, headaches, mood swings (severe pms), etc. Can anyone tell me if their acid reflux ever resolved?
I also am experiencing throat problems as a result of Mirena. I've never had problems with my throat or acid reflux in the past, but since the Mirena I've been diagnosed with reflux and sometimes, I have this annoying, faint pain in the back of my throat. My symptoms seem to get worse in the winter than any other month though.
I'm going to be watching for this. I just had the Mirena inserted three weeks ago. I happened upon this site because I started what appears to be another cycle this month and I wasn't sure if that was a side effect. Oddly enough a had a couple of other issues going on that I hadn't even connected to the Mirena. I have broke out in a horrible rash, mainly on my face and down my neck. Then when I saw your post it made me wonder about my throat. Years ago I used to get fever blisters on my tonsils. Just recently I have had that happen again. I will be keeping a close eye on these issues. I am already wondering if I should have the stupid thing removed and am ashamed that I didn't do more research before I made the decision to have it inserted. Like many others my obgyn recommended it highly and boasted about the fact that there weren't many side effects.
First of all do not be ashamed...unfortunately most of us are in the same boat. I would suggest if all this started happening after mirena was inserted...GET IT OUT! I wish I found this site sooner and would have put it all together much sooner than I did. I am one week mirena free, not much has changed, but I have a good feeling that it will.
OMG!!! I have had the same symptoms. I had the Mirena inserted June 8th and removed Aug 3rd, 2010. I am a professional singer and I felt that the Mirena had everything to do with my voice not being the same. I feel so bad because the Nexium that was prescribed didn't help at all. I wish that they had a pill and my voice can go back to normal. I am so upset with myself for getting the Mirena, thinking that it would help with my periods, but it made everything else, especially my voice, worse. I wonder how long does it take for my voice to go back to normal. My ENT Specialist told me that I didn't have any nodules on my vocal cords so that's a relief, but however, I need my esophagus to stop being swollen, due to the acid. I have never had GERD/acid reflux in my life until the Mirena came into my life. I am just praying that God will relieve me and make my life normal again! Has anyone had any relief or their voice back to normal since their removal of the Mirena? If so, how long did it take and what did it take for it to return? Vocal rest? Any home-made remedies? Please advise soon! Many blessings!
I had my mirena inserted in March 2008 and started having severe acid reflux issues in January 2011, as well as digestive issues that have been diagnosed as IBS. My gastroenterologist doesn't believe they have anything to do with my mirena, though she can't tell me what is causing the issues. Acid reducers (2 Prevacid a day) and fiber seem to help some of the time, but never quite do the trick. Has anyone else also experienced digestive issues such as cronic gas, constipation, or diarrhea since having their mirena?
Unfortunately Yes my self and many of us here suffered with reflux and many other side effects. That was one of my first symptoms and I took acid reducer medication for 5 years. I lost so much weight that even water make me feel really sick. I'm now 3 years post removal and although I still suffer from other side effects from mirena, the reflux problem is gone. I can now eat anything even spicy foods. Don't trust your drs so much I trusted them and now 3 yers after removal my health is not back to normal, and till this day they still don't accept that mirena caused me so much damage. Get it out before it gets worst.
You might want to remind your doctor that progesterone affects smooth muscle. Your esophagus and intestines are made of smooth muscle. It's all related. I had the same issues. The Mirena has been out 4 years and those probs have been gone for a long time.
I had the Mirena inserted in November and got acid reflux about 3 weeks in. Nothing seems to help it go away. I'm fed up with it. I also lost vision in my right eye just after Christmas that is still being tested to find out why. But I'm considering removing the mirena since these two things occurred after mirena came into my life. I had it put in to help with my iron deficiency but now I'm not sure what's worse!
Hi. I know your message is very old but I am hoping you still see this. Did your situation improve? If so, what helped? I have the exact same symptoms as you had. Got my Mirena in December and started having problems in February. Has it taken out a few days ago. Just got results of endoscopy and said mild reflux. Going to try new medication but wondering what happened. Thanks!
