Jenny Brannan answered the phone, and 20 years of fear bubbled to the surface with the callerís first question: "Do you know who Ray Adams is?"
The Missouri woman spent most of her life trying to forget that name. In 1993, when she was 12, she accused the charismatic gymnastics coach of sexually abusing her. But the case never went to court.
Now a Florida prosecutor was on the phone, asking Brannan to share her story. Adams had hurt another little girl.
Brannanís first thought: "He's still doing it?"
Brannan would eventually learn that Adams had been accused of inappropriate conduct involving 15 other girls. Over the years, he had worked in at least a dozen gyms in four states. He had been fired at least six times. He had been criminally charged four times. Once he was acquitted. Another time he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery for abusing four little girls. Now he was facing two new criminal prosecutions in Florida.
Yet, somehow, Adams kept getting hired, even by elite gyms that produced Olympians for USA Gymnastics.
Former gymnast Becca Seaborn watches the sport on television with a genuine appreciation for the athleticism. But one part makes her cringe.
Itís when a male coach hugs a female gymnast after her routine.
ďI honestly have a hard time seeing that,Ē said Seaborn, who was molested by her coach starting when she was 10. Seaborn is now 26. She is building a life of her own, moving past the pain. Still, she said, ďbecause of what happened, my mind goes to the worst.Ē
A jury in 2003 found Beccaís predator, Mark Schiefelbein, guilty of seven counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor. He was sentenced to 96 years in prison, which was later reduced to 36 years.
How USA Gymnastics protected coaches over kids
Early in the trial, prosecutors learned that USA Gymnastics had compiled a thick file of prior complaints about Schiefelbein, without forwarding them to authorities. So Schiefelbein moved from gyms in California, Utah, Texas and Illinois before getting a coaching job in Tennessee, where he met Beccaís parents, Ross and Jill Robinson.
He became a family friend. He had dinner at their home. He went to hockey games with Ross.
He told Becca she was his favorite gymnast, and not to tell anyone about the touching. It would only get him in trouble. Becca testified that she stayed silent for more than a year because she was scared to make her coach angry. She also was scared that her parents would be disappointed in her. And, she said, she was embarrassed.
ďIn her heart, she knew it was wrong, but at the same time, being that young, she was confused about what to do, how to handle it,Ē Ross Robinson told IndyStar. ďThey don't have the emotional mechanism in place or the maturity to handle that."
At the sentencing, the Robinsons described the human toll on Becca.
They said she suffered from ďsevere nightmares,Ē including one in which her predator was chasing her to touch or kill her. In another version of the nightmare, the coach would force her to watch him touch other people. She would wake up crying.
She was afraid to go out alone. She lost friends who didnít believe her. Counseling, the Robinsons said, helped Becca control anger and do better in school.
IndyStar seeks to unseal abuse documents
Ross Robinson recalled a phone conversation he had with former USA Gymnastics President Robert Colarossi. Robinson said Colarossi told him USA Gymnastics couldnít police coaches aggressively because it couldnít afford legal expenses from lawsuits brought by coaches.
Colarossi didnít respond to IndyStarís phone messages seeking comment. But Robinson remembered his own response to Colarossi this way: ďHow do you live with yourself? How does this organization live with itself? Basically, you're telling me the money is more important than our kids are and their safety is."
The Robinsons considered filing suit against USA Gymnastics for failing to stop Schiefelbein. But they decided against it. They already had been through a trial covered by newspapers and television. They had been on a national television program to talk about the issue of abuse.
Becca, who now has a 2-year-old daughter, also is ready to move on.
ďYes, I was molested by my gymnastics coach,Ē she said. ďBut I'm a wife, I'm a mother, I'm a daughter. There's so much more in this life than what has happened to you, and you can move on and grow and still live your life and be extremely happy.Ē
But the Robinsons were willing to speak out again, after an IndyStar investigation revealed that the USA Gymnastics policies that allowed Schiefelbein to keep coaching remain in effect.

Jill Robinson, who competed in gymnastics at Brigham Young University, said sadness and anger remain.
ďIt just makes me sick that this is still happening, that these children are not being protected,Ē she said. ďIt's just not fair. The Olympics are going to start. These kids are going to want to go jump to gyms and be just like these heroes they see on TV. And it just starts all over again. It just makes me really sad that nothing's changed.Ē
Ross Robinson said itís time for USA Gymnastics to become more transparent and to report allegations to authorities.
ďI understand that you're innocent until proven guilty, and I believe in that,Ē Robinson said. ďIt's the right way for the justice system to work. But I also believe we need a little bit of logical thinking here, that where there's smoke there could be fire. And when kids are involved, then we have to take the extra steps to make sure that that's not the case ó that your kids are safe with these individuals.Ē
Hi Im a 15 year old girl and I suspect i was touched when i was younger. I have no memory but i have so many symptoms of sexual abuse as a child. The one that really freaks me out is that a symptom is being aroused while hearing about a child whos been abused. Im not a pedophile(i actually prefer older men)but apparently thats my body "reliving" the abuse. Ive always felt so connected to the victims on law and order SVU and im so attracted to those stories, it makes me feel disgusting. I cant have intimate relationships, I have serious trust issues and ive had multiple rape dreams, and all i think about is sex. When i was super young i forgot how old i was i had a dream a man was peeing towards me and i wet the bed from the dream. I also had a dream my guyfriend raped me. In 6th grade i had a dream that i was being raped by an older man and i said my boobs were gonna explode for some reason?? Like what?? I sexualize meaningful relationships no matter who it is and i love being humiliated and being in pain during sex and ive always fantasized about rape an I don't know why I feel so disgusting saying that. When i was younger i tried to kiss my uncle in the bad way. Ugh ew saying that makes me so grossed out. But i think that was my way of acting out?? Like ok?? if that means anything. I feel like saying no to a man is rude and i feel the need to please men how ever they like no matter what it is and i feel like my sexuality is so dirty and shameful.I feel like every man just uses me for sex and is taking advantage of me. I have so many symptoms of sexual abuse its crazy. I just dont have any memories.I feel like sex is the only thing I'm good at. I did have a messed up family life and child hood i was always put down on my weight and my parents didnt stand up for me or nurture me like they should have so now i have body dysmorphia disorder, depression, and im suicidal and went through 2 eating disorders. "DALLAS ó State agents raided the Dallas offices of adult classified ad portal Backpage dot com and arrested Chief Executive Officer Carl Ferrer following allegations that adult and child sex-trafficking victims were forced into prostitution through escort ads posted on the site.
Ferrer, 55, was arrested on a California warrant after arriving Thursday in Houston on a flight from Amsterdam. Authorities also issued warrants for the arrest of the siteís controlling shareholders, Michael Lacey, 68, and James Larkin, 67.
ďMaking money off the backs of innocent human beings by allowing them to be exploited for modern-day slavery is not acceptable in Texas,Ē Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, said in a statement.
California Attorney General Kamala Harris said that Ferrer was arrested on felony charges of pimping a minor, pimping, and Conspiracy to commit pimping. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond and will face an extradition hearing before he can be returned to California.
Under Californiaís law, felony pimping is defined as making money off of prostitutes or soliciting customers for prostitution.
ďRaking in millions of dollars from the trafficking and exploitation of vulnerable victims is outrageous, despicable and illegal,Ē said Harris, a Democrat who is running for the U.S. Senate in next monthís election. ďBackpage and its executives purposefully and unlawfully designed Backpage to be the worldís top online brothel.Ē
An attorney representing Backpage, Liz McDougall, did not immediately respond to telephone and email messages left by The Associated Press.
Lacey and Larkin are former owners of the Village Voice and the Phoenix New Times. An attorney who previously represented the two men, Michael Manning, did not immediately respond to a telephone message from The AP.
Backpage advertises a wide range of services, but the California arrest warrant alleges that internal business records obtained through a search warrant show that 99 percent its revenue came from its adult services section between January 2013 and March 2015. California officials said the site collects fees from users who use coded language and nearly nude photos to offer sex for money.
Worldwide revenue from sex ads topped $3.1 million in just one week last year, according to a court affidavit. It says Ferrer expanded Backpageís share of online sex marketing by creating affiliated sites including EvilEmpire dot com and BigCity dot com with related content.
Larkin and Lacey each received $10 million bonuses from the website in September 2014, according to the court filing. It says Backpage was created in 2004, but since 2014 has been owned by a Netherlands-based company that has Ferrer as its only named partner.
California authorities said the stateís three-year investigation found many of the ads include victims of sex trafficking including children under the age of 18.

One of the advertisers, identified only as 15-year-old ďE.S.,Ē Ēwas forced into prostitution at the age of 13 by her pimp,Ē according to an affidavit filed with the complaint. She used other online advertising services until they were shut down, the court filing says, when she turned to Backpage.
ďI mean really, coming from someone my age, there is too much access, like itís too easy for people to get on it and post an ad,Ē she told California Special Agent Brian Fichtner, according to his affidavit.
California officials said their investigation was prompted in part by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which reported 2,900 instances to California authorities since 2012 when suspected child sex trafficking occurred using Backpage.
The criminal complaint includes allegations that five minors, three of them including ďE.S.Ē under age 16, paid to post advertisements on Backpage.
The charges against Ferrer could bring him nearly 22 years in prison, while Larkin and Lacey face a maximum six years.
A U.S. Senate subcommittee that has investigated the company estimated its annual revenues at more than $150 million."
