I was wondering what affects oil pulling has had on your hair? I have had problems with my hair falling out for the past 5 years or so. The doctors finally found out that it was a hormonal problem brought on by the birth control pill which i am now off. But they also put me on Rogaine 5% which is extremely hard to get off of without your hair falling all out again. Since I've been off the birth control pill for the past 5 months, my hair has mostly stopped falling out and regrown great (i'm still on the rogaine). But since i've been oil pulling for the past 9 days, it's been falling out alot. I'm thinking that's because of the toxins coming out? The doctors for my hormones did suggest taking anti-oxidant supplements like green tea extract and grape seed extract which I do, so I have to think toxins play a part in your hair falling out. Anyhow I'm really hoping this fallout stops soon so I'm not bald soon! The oil pulling has helped me so much with my sinus's and migraines that I really dont want to stop it because of my hair. Has anyone else had any problems with this?
I started OP in Feb 07. I have had problems with hair falling out on and off for years (probably since the birth of my eldest boy, now 18). Prior to starting OP I was also using minoxidil for several years. Every time I stopped using it, the hair would fall out. I had read about people OPing and having wonderful results with regard to their hair and so I believed that I could stop minoxidil and that OP would prevent my hair from falling out. I was wrong.
Not only did I lose the hair that I had regrown with minoxidil but I have since lost much much more. Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming OP. Not long after starting OP I also started Iodine and did some cleansing protocols. I don't know if I loosened up a bunch of toxins, fluoride and chlorine in particular, or what the story was, but my health got much worse. I have been seeing my GP and recently a ND and had all kinds of tests which revealed low iron anemia and hypothyroid, and some hormonal problems (probably also from the pill). Plus I suspect adrenal problems as well.
Anyway, I continue to OP daily. I did very briefly go back to minoxidil, but the hair loss is so widespread I would have to bath in the stuff and I just don't want to do that to my body anymore. That stuff is so strong and stinks so bad. And I don't want to have to depend on it for life. I believe that my hair will stop falling out and eventually grow back when I get the rest of my health sorted out. I think that it might already be slowing at least a little.
I take a good quality silica, use ACV, MSM, EPO. I only use organic shampoo's and try to keep the washing down to a minimum. I have been trying to eliminate as many chemicals from my life as possible. I continue to cleanse, take Iodine and do whatever else I can to improve my health.
I still believe that OP will benefit my hair in the long run. In the meantime I believe that it is benefiting my overall health and that is why I will continue to do it.
I know that most of the reasons for hair loss is internal, but I just bought (and have been reading about) three ayurvedic herbs that are supposed to be superb for hair loss:
Amla, Shikakai & Aritha
If you google then there is tons of info regarding the re-growth of hair. I don't have a problem with my hair, but my son has really bad dandruff, and I bought them for him. I thought of trying them on the entire family actually though.
I guess the men and women in India have this thing down. And they certainly all have nice hair!
Just thought I'd throw that out there. If anyone here has experience with these herbs, I'm all ears. I haven't cooked them up yet.
I bought some Shikakai & Aritha online. Actually sent all the way to Canada for them, which is crazy when you think that India is closer to me than Canada is. I must admit I have only tried them a couple of times a few weeks ago. It seemed to me that they made my hair fall even worse. I mostly notice the falling when I shampoo, so I stopped using them. But I was only thinking yesterday that I should give them another try. I have no doubt that they will be helpful for the regrowth stage. I also tried taking Amla internally months ago when my hair first started falling. It had no effect whatsoever.
I strongly suspect that all these things help, but if you are messed up internally, then nothing is going to completely stop the hair loss until you get the root cause (pardon the pun) fixed first.
Shikakai, amla and aritha are really good for the hair. These ayurvedic products are good but they work very slowly but without any side effects. You will not see any overnight results with any of these. You have to use them for a very very long time.
I have been using shikakai, amla and coconut oil since my childhood (although I stopped using shikakai when I was 14 and switched to shampoo because it is a lot more easier. Shikaki is hard to use because it dosent lather and the bathroom becomes messy and its a hell lot of work to wash it off your hair. Im talking about homemade shikakai here...that is get the shikakai and powder it at home not the branded ones...which do lather..but I doubt their authencity)
Massaging your hair with coconut oil before you wash your hair is really good!!
It moisturises and cools your body. Soaking amla in coconut oil and then applying the oil to the hair also helps. Hibiscus flowers also have great properties which promote hair growth. Soaking dried hibiscus flowers in coconut oil and then applying it to the hair is a famous Indian recepie for hair growth.
Well i have a thryoid condition but it's just a lump on my thyroid. Not hypo or hyper. It's tested every 6 months and has been regulating itself for over 10 years now. So i don't think it's that. I am pretty positive that the cause of my initial hairloss was hormonal brought on by birth control pills. Especially since when i stopped them, the hairloss stopped almost completely.
My hope now is that this new hairloss will subside when whatever toxins that are in my scalp/hairshaft/roots, are finally gone from the oil pulling. I can only think that the reason it's falling out at all is that the oil pulling is making the toxins come to the surface.
does that sound right?
