Night before last after taking magnesium citrate that afternoon (not the question - I know when and how to use it) it was time to go to the bathroom. I tried and could not do anything. It hurt so bad, but nothing would come out. That hadn't happened before. I took stool softeners hoping that would help. In the middle of the night I felt something wet and looked to see that I had "leaked", but I still couldn't have a BM. The next morning was the same thing. Being the bowel-informed people that we are, I was pretty sure I knew what was wrong. I researched and had about 80% of the symptoms of fecal impaction. I was leaking more and hurting more and thought a small bit of Fleet enema might help "soften" the problem. It wouldn't even penetrate the problem. All of the research said the cure was a doctor would "insert a lubed finger in order to remove the. . ." or you could do it at home. One site suggested you do it with a friend in case you passed out from the pain or have the friend do it (I'd die first). For 2 days now I have donned the surgical gloves and excavated. It seems, regardless of the pain and blood, that it will never stop. I'm still leaking, and had my husband go out for Depends. I can only sit on the toilet, and have spent about 20 hours total on it, scraping away due to the hardness. Has anyone else run into an issue like this during a routine cleanse (or any other cleanse)? How did you handle it? Did you find something to soften it, or perhaps find a friend? Ha. I'd like to know some type of solution before I try anything like this again (the regular cleansing or the scraping). It's too much pain to go through. Many thanks.
Well, there's several ways to attack this and get things moving. But we'll all need a bit more information here:
What kind of cleanse are you/were you doing?
Were you clogged before starting the cleanse? Or did the cleanse CAUSE the impaction?
What is "normal" bowel activity for you? daily? weekly?
How much water are you drinking daily? (not fluid intake, WATER intake)
Is this a recurring problem/issue?
Do you have an enema bag/supplies to use?
Are you experiencing nausea or vomiting?
--**--If you're starting to have vomiting, you need to do something to get this impaction out FAST, as the situation is critical. Some would say that when you start vomiting, it's time to abandon the natural/healthy cure and go to the ER. While I would never discourage anyone from seeking emergency medical care if they feel they need it, I feel that when things get critical is when we need to become aggressive with our natural treatments. No one ever died from castor Oil Enema s, herbal laxatives, prune juice, and/or Epsom Salts (within reason), but lots of people die in ER's
My initial advise is to attack this aggressively from "both ends", so to speak...so make sure to consume at least 1/2 gallon of water today (along with a couple of teaspoons of Sea Salt (or Himalayan Salt) to keep your electrolytes up.
Personally, I would take 2 tablespoons of Epsom Salts mixed in 8 ounces of warm water. You should see some activity from that within an hour to an hour and a half. (Fleet enemas and over the counter softeners are virtually useless for serious impactions...as you've found out).
Listen to your body AND your common sense. If you keep flushing it from above and flushing it from below, the impaction doesn't ultimately stand a chance. And I know this sounds remedial, but sometimes the age-old basics are the answer...drink a quart of prune juice...about a cup an hour. Of course, if you have ANY type of herbal laxative that stimulates peristalsis (the squeezing action of the intestines), then take as much of it as you feel safe taking.
And most of all...RELAX RELAX RELAX!! Meditate, take an ES bath, listen to soothing music, calm yourself as much as possible...you CAN AND WILL be back to normal in no time. The more you fret, the tighter your muscles become. (One of my mom's elderly friends that has bowel issues ALL of her life and has/had absolutely no 'natural' knowledge, had a severe impaction and had eliminating NOTHING for two weeks. I assured her over and over and over again that she could release the impaction and cure her life-long problem, and overnited her a bottle of Dr. Schulze s IF#1. She took ONE capsule of IF#1 and completely released the impaction in just a few hours...and there's NO way one little capsule had that kind of impact in just a few hours. She simply stopped worrying about it, and out it came...so NEVER underestimate the power of thought and relaxation!).
Keep us updated, and keep watching for others' advice.
Hi. Thanks for the concern and quick reply. I rarely have BMs on my own ie, unprovoked from another source. Once a week I do magenisum citrate to "flush" things out. I tried a Fleet enema, and you know how narrow the insert is. It was like shooting water on a rock. It would not go in, through, etc, and all the product ran out. I tried to use a Fleet suppository which wouldn't think of going in. It's been three days now but, by the grace of God, but I finished excavating. I almost screamed during times, but I've removed what I think is all of it. I'm still leaking some and still wearing the Depends just in case.
Re: Questions. I do that type of cleanse on a weekly basis and have never had this problem. I am a vegetarian and eat well; I'm also lactose intolerant, so that cuts out ice cream, cheese, etc. I have had colonics, and the woman actually told me to stop coming due to the fact that she wasn't seeing anything unusual showing up after my gall bladder cleansed and didn't want to upset the levels of my natural bacteria. I thought that was fair of her as she was losing $65 per shot in 2001 dollars. I would try anything, I don't have a problem with that, but the only thing moving this mass was manual. I was afraid if I tried to get it out the other way that I would really cause a problem. All I drink is bottled water (2 liters/day) and Gatorade (about the same). How long have I had a constipation problem: when I was 3 weeks old my mother called the doctor to say that her baby wasn't "going". I drank prune juice mixed with my formula until I was off the bottle. 34 years later her baby still isn't going. I do Pilates and walk about 4 miles/day on a treadmill so it isn't that I'm sedentary.
Again, thank you so much. Love from North Carolina and God Bless America.
Hello Intuition, I have suffered from the same thing you did right up to the excavating. I did not have the leakage problem though. I now think people like us have more than one issue to deal with in getting better colon health. Probably the first is hydration, although you sound like you are working on that. However, you might want to consider switching from the sweet and chemical laden Gatorade to a more natural electrolyte drink. Simply mix 3/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon or lemon and lime juice. 1/4-1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt and 1/2/cup sweetener (I use evaporated organic cane juice rich is rich in minerals) and about 1/2 gallon pure water. Drink this throughout the day. Once hydration is optimal then do a flush with a magnesium based laxative like your mag. citrate. When you are finished with that eat some raw or frozen corn, swallow some whole if you can. See how long it takes that corn to come out. This will help determine your transit time. If it takes more than 24 hours (at the very most) you need to consider using a Bowel Cleanse that contains an herbal stimulant laxative like Senna or Cascara Sagrada. My peristalsis had all but stopped (due to nerve inflammation according to my Naturopath) I am now ding the Dr. SchulzeColon Cleanse with Intestinal Formulas #1&2. I have struggled with that, but after a week and a half the IF#1 is finally working. If all continues to go well I will begin IF#2 at the end of the week. Hopefully this will help stimulate and tone your colon to work better without it becoming dependent on the herbs. IF#1 also contains cleansing and lubricating herbs so it is not as harsh a straight Senna or Cascara capsule. When you are through with this portion of the cleanse you might want to consider a good probiotic to replace/grow healthy bacteria. I already have some Primal Defense to use, but you can use yogurt or Keifer if the other is too expensive. If have found that in serious cases colon cleansing is not quick, easy or inexpensive. But, since so much of our health revolves around a healthy colon, it is well worth the effort.
Run through Unyquity's posts here, she has given some excellent advice on colon cleansing plus some valuable links to other Websites. Good Luck, remember you are not the only one struggling. Hopefully we can help and support each other.
Yes, any sweetener will do, but the healthier the better. Some form of simple Sugar is necessary for the body to absorb electrolytes from the lemon juice and Sea Salt . I am getting ready to fix some of the drink myself. I did a New Year's Liver Flush then spent yesterday with friends. I did not get enough to drink and am paying for it today with increased pain.
YOu said you just started the DR Schulze cleans, are you eating food with it? Was wondering as my Hubby wants to do it also but does need to eat some food as he has a hard job and needs food to get throgh the day. Tahnks
Yes, you may certainly eat when doing a Schulze bowel cleanse. Of course, (it just makes sense) that anytime you can burden the body and digestive tract with less food for processing, the more energy it will have for cleansing itself.
Also, make SURE the recommended quantity of pure water is consumed when doing ANY cleanse (especially the IF#2 portion of the Schulze cleanse).
Oh how I feel for you, a few years ago I had the same bleeding hemorrhoids and problems going to the toilet. A friend told me about The Lemonade Diet .com I did the Detox for 21 days and never had problems again. The Dr. wanted to "Rubber Band it " wrap a rubber band and then CUT !!! the hemorrhoid out with NO guarantee I would be cured. I was some what over weight and I lost weight with the detox !!! Try Smooth Move by Traditional Medicinals its a tea the best I've found drink the tea at night and do the salt water in the morning 2 tea spoons of Sea Salt only !! in warm water (spring) 32 oz in the morning and if you don't go after that theres something wrong Oh this is IMPORTANT DO NOT over STUFF you stomach late at night and NO food after the tea !!!
Dear intuition, I couldn't agree more with the recommendations unequity suggests regarding Castor Oil Enema s to help relieve fecal impactions. Oil Enema s are always somewhat messy, but nothing promotes relief from an impaction better than an oil enema.
Olive oil is also excellent and has been used for this purpose for thousands of years. You can use a 4 or 8 ounce bulb syringe filled with olive oil and retained for one hour or more, or better, overnight. But you better be wearing a Depends and expect some leaking.
Afterwards, a soap solution enema followed by a saline or plain water enema usually provides relief if you haven't already achieved it by this time.
All lovers, supporters, and cheerleaders I bid you goodbye as I put my head under the blanket and live there. During the last part of my excavation (and boy, I excavated like no other could ever do), I noticed something a bit sharp. I thought it was a rogue piece of corn unwilling to give it up. After all was said and done, it was still there. On April 29, 2005, I swallowed the end of a plastic fork while eating birthday cake. I assumed at the time that it was in and out in a 3 day cycle or so (the doctors did several x-rays to make sure it hadn't lodged in a major organ on its way down). With this "thing" that is capsule shaped but larger still left after all was said and done, I convinced myself that the "capsule" (which had a sharp pain sometimes when I'd be especially aggressive in my work) was the fork that had been carried along in the impaction and had had material transferred with it on its way. I tried. I tried more. I was able to remove everything but it. Finally it started poking me in several different places when I'd sit down, and knew I needed help (I can't do it myself). All I needed was for it to be held up, cut into 2 pieces for easy removal, and saved for nostalgia. Off to the doctor and his truster scissors I go. I have an anal fistula. One of the larger ones. If it can't be shrunk using medication delivered in suppository form in 2 weeks, it's good old surgery for me, because that means some blah blah blah tissue is involved that needs to be removed. In what would probably be out-patient. And I'm now on Zelnorm. (Kick the blanket.)
