I someone is going to have a drink, would vodka with a sugar-free mixer be the "safest" thing? At least better than beer or wine? I know that any alcohol at all can't be good for candida, but for the OCCASSIONAL drink... Tonight I'm having a cocktail made with a good quality clear vodka, seltzer water sweetened with Stevia, and lime. What do you think?
most distilled liquor such as vodka, brandy etc. mixed w/ water or a non sweetened mix, is fine. no more than two shots maximum though in a 24 hour period.
i generally drink around 4 to 5 shots a week, but rarely/virtually never more than 1 shot a day. one drink here and there is really nice though. keeps me partially sane.
you have to watch it though because not all the hard stuff is ok for candida. for example crown royal's 'limited edition' whiskey had something in it that my candida fed off, i dont know what. most whiskey's are fine. pay very close attention to how your body reacts to stuff, and with alcohol its detrimental you dont over do it.
and NEVER drink beer or wine while on the candida diet.
Alcohol metabolizes out to sugar, probably the thing that bothered charles obscure's candida issues. Alcohol of any kind is bad for candida people. Not to mention that the alcohol probably washes out/kills off any good bacteria in your gut.
actually most of the hard stuff should be fine ~in small amounts~. when i drink a shot in a day i have no problems at all, and believe me i have an incredibly strong 'radar' for stuff that affects my candida. (which is why i picked out that 1 brand of alcohol that affected me that way, and it was minor.) i eat the strictest diet of anyone ive come across even on this board.
ive also heard from a naturopath doctor small amounts of distilled alcohol is not harmful for candida. (he recommended a max. of 2 shots a week though).
alcohol is one of those tricky things. in small amounts i feel it can be beneficial. but its one of the worst possible things to over-do it on.
Think we are talking occasional drinking here? Totally agree with Charles - and I have been on a restricted diet for years!
If I do drink, my choice is always vodka on the rocks. Infact strangely, I have often had less of a reaction to the odd meal out (with all the wrong foods) when I have had a vodka (usually an expresso coffee too). I have never been able to work out why this is? Interesting that vodka is alkaline....
I was told by a food allergist years ago that the mixers can give you more of a reaction than the alcohol. He also said wine was ok if it was "chateau bottled". ie fine, expensive wines (less additives?). So if you have the cash?!
When I have a drink, which isn't very often, it's either straight vodka (Stoli) or a margarita made with just tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. (I can't stand that sweet 'n sour mix they like to use in bars.) That's all my body can handle with this dang candida. I think I read somewhere that vodka and tequila are the safest things to drink...but, they always say you shouldn't drink at all. Pffft
I am 28 and my life was basically socialising with friends often in pubs drinking beer and the rest of it.
I became candida aware then tried the filtered (less yeast) lagers, but I was kidding myself! I then moved onto vodka, with grapefruit juice. It initially tasted way too vodkery. I was kidding myself. So I started to drink either neat vodka (impressed some drinkers!) or vodka and sparkling mineral water with slice of lemon. I became so used to vodka that I could and did drink loads. Eventually (and know) belive it or not vodka tastes sweet to me. Literally sweet. So alas, once again I was kidding myself.
If you follow the other rules 100% and only have it occasionally then im sure it will only slighty slow progress, not prevent it. Most of us are prone to cheating in one way or another but this seems to be cranked tighter (leading to recovery) as time goes by.
My cheating has turned to pistachios as I figure mold does not feed the candida, but can make the body say 'yuck'.
Anyway im sure im still kidding myself with these and again this dieting will be tweaked.
x2 Liver Flushes has removed all stones and I know I am nearing clearance zone!
Way to go Wood Elf. Of the many people on this board you can be counted as one of those who is really trying hard and not complaining about their "Cake Syndrome." Hats off to you for refraining from the mug or shot glass. obj
