I am completely new to this board and desperate for advice from people who have had the same experience. I have JUST barely survived a 10 day course of flagyl (metronidazole) 500mg 3X daily. Needless to say, the side effects were unbearable at times. Dizzy, fatigued, lightheaded, brain-fog, depression, anxiety. UGH. But, alas, it is finally over.
I have yet to feel much relief from my protozoan infection (E. Histoylitica) but I am hoping this is because the side effects of flagyl, or the parasite die-off, are causing diarrhea, stomach pains, cramps.
ANYWAY, now, the doctor is saying I need to take Humatin (Paromomycin) for 10 days to eliminate the parasites from my GI Lumen that may have survived.
My question is, from those who have taken both, will the side effects of humatin be the same as the flagyl side effects?! Because I honestly cannot go through this hell again. I had to take the week of of school, and I cannot afford to do that again. I am assuming the humatin is better tolerated after reading horror stories about flagyl, can anyone with experience verify if this is true??
I sugest you follow your drs advice and take paromomycin a soon as possible!! As far as I know you are supposed to take Flagyl and Paromomycin consecutively without days of interruption in between!!!
Taking those meds suck but its nothing compared to how E. Histoylitica will ruin your life. I didn't have many problems with Paromomycin with the exception of the expected drowsiness and diarrhoea. Paromomycin did not make me agitated like the first time I took Flagyl.
Follow your Drs advice and pay attention to your body.
Tinidazole might be a bit better then Flagyl but I wish I was lucky to have a Dr prescribe me your combination right in the beginning... How much paromomycin did your dr prescribe?
Is this the first time you are taking medication against protozoa? How and where did you get diagnosed? Which lab? This is a very important since a lot of people are not able to get a proper diagnose because labs are terribly unreliable! Please help people and share the information about the lab that you used. You will be a hero if you found a good lab :o)
You shouldn't have those side effects with Paro - Flagyl is well known to make people feel that way, it is a nasty drug - doctor should have given you Secnidazole or Tinidazole which are flagyl derivatives but have fewer side effects.
I did not have any side effects from paramycin at all. I have heard Flagl is a horrible drug with terribel side effects and have caused permenent damage to females. Also, if you do the research, EH is resistant to flagl.
>Also, if you do the research, EH is resistant to flagl.
It's true that EH can be resistant to Flagyl and Flagyl had failed a number of us but It's possible that Flagyl can work for Matthew in this case since it might be the first time Flagyl is taken and its taken with Paromomycin.
I agree most people have taken flagyl by itself and before they had a diagnosis of E. his. It is possible if it was followed by para, it would have been a success. The paromomycin should be much easier to handle but yes I would listen to your doctor - flagyl will NOT work alone.
\For histolytica I took tindamax instead and had no side effects from it or paramomycin.
Have read the histolytica can be resistanct to flagyl and that tindamax is preferred. Perhaps if you havent started the paramo you could request tindamax and start over. Hardly anyone gets side effects from tindamax and if youve waited to take the paramo then you actually might need to start over anyway.
