I have not been on the forum with any regularity for a few months. I have been doing my own investigative work in terms of assessing my progress and connecting the dots as to what I believe really has helped.
I will share my observations and experiences:
I came to this forum with many of the same symptoms that others have documented: constipation, brain fog, weight loss, sugar cravings, hypoglycemia, fatigue, etc.
I tried lots of anti-Candida protocols (including Pharmaceuticals, Herbals, Homeopathic, Severe Dietary Modifications, etc)
I was experiencing lots of Stressors in my life at that time (retirement and the anxieties associated with the same)
I was diagnosed with Candida as well as Adrenal Fatigue and started the AF protocol (Adaptogens, Sugar restriction, Caffeine restriction, Increased B5, B6, Ester - C)
I ate mostly vegetables and fish-chicken protein for about 7 months.
I gave up bread and fruit during the same period.
I ate complex carbohydrates, namely Quinoa and Cream of Buckwheat for about 7 months.
Effective, November of 2010, I resumed eating fruit, I gradually added non-gluten breads into my diet. I started eating grains like Oatmeal and Corn Grits / Hominy. By January of this year, I was back eating as I had prior to the diagnosis. But, I continued to restrict Caffeine and introduced Agave rather than Sugar into my diet. I found ways to minimize my stress level, returned to working out (minus the level of intensity that I engaged in at the time of the AF and Candida diagnoses).
A month or so ago, I had another crisis in my life that involved a close friend. The stress was quite significant. I noticed that I was beginning to not sleep well, that I was gaining weight around the middle and I was starting to get muscle twitches (though slight in my legs). There was no evidence of Candida as my tongue was pink, my bowels regular and the sugar cravings had not kicked in as before. However, if I started to eat sweets, then I would want more. But I didn't focus on eating them when they were not around.
I decided to focus on strengthening my adrenals as I suspected they were working overtime. I found a product, Cortisol Manager and started taking it. I also found a product named, Slumber - EZ and added that to my product. Life Extension came out with a Product that was based on Milk Polypeptides (warm milk theory) and I included that. I later added Melatonin to my protocol, and started sleeping through the night. I added Relora and that assisted with the regulation of Cortisol as well.
My story is about figuring out that my Adrenals probably created most of the problems for me (recently and in the past) and there is a fine line between the synergistic effect of Adrenals and Candida. I took lots of anti-fungals, so much so that I grew weary of the process. I reached a point where I could not take another pill or teaspoon of the chemicals. I decided that they would always "give me permission" to make poor food choices. I put them aside and learned to rely on my own better judgment (which wasn't so good much of the time)
Today, I am recovering form the last Adrenal bout, but I did not need much external intervention. All I did was to connect the dots in terms of my body and my experiences. As I listened to (and paid attention to) the symptoms, past and present, it became clear that for me, the Adrenal issue was probably the greater challenge. (and always will be).
