I ask for advice from all posters on this topic. Noting the information I provided below, is this theory a solid one that can explain autism?
My son was recently diagnosed with ADD (inattentive type, not hyperactive). From time to time, various doctors would note that he also has a few autistic symptoms, but he was evaluated for that and is not autistic per se.
My son had a food allergy (ELISA) test done. It showed that he is "sensitive" (not really allergic, but has an "intolerance") to the following. NOTICE ANYTHING??
all dairy, especially cheese (very high), and yogurt
He did have allergy skin testing done and is somewhat allergic to peanuts and soy, although we never noticed any reactions.
I have read the theory that early antibiotic use, somehow also related to vaccines, can trigger an overgrowth of yeast in the intestines. Then autistic symptoms start. It gets worse when we eat a Standard American Diet full of sugars, processed foods, and white flours. The theory goes that these foods feed yeast. Well, they ALSO FEED PARASITES, right? The current main dietary intervention for autism is eliminating foods that contain casein (dairy products, namely cheese) and gluten (mostly wheat, rye, and oats). In its fungal form, the yeast grows like ivy on a wall - poking holes into the intestinal wall and creating "leaky gut syndrome." The gluten and casein foods create certain byproducts that bother the bloodstream/brain when they leak through the gut wall, creating autistic symptoms.
We have been on a strict gluten-free, casein-free diet for a little over 3 weeks, with no visible improvement in his mood. He is not one of those kids who "self-limit" their diet to those foods that encourage yeast overgrowth - often those kids who self-limit their diets are the ones who almost surely show improvement on a gluten-free, casein-free diet. Apparently the byproducts of gluten and casein form opioids and soothe the children's brains, which is why they crave them.
I have also read that tartaric acid levels are really high in many autistic children. During treatment with antifungals such as nystatin, their autism resolves and tartaric acid levels fall. After discontinuing antifungals, the autism returns and tartaric acid levels rise. Also, if the child is on a gluten-free, casein-free diet, sometimes if they ingest any gluten or casein, the autistic symptoms return.
WHAT IF parasites play a role here? WHAT IF they have yeast in them? Or WHAT IF it's BOTH yeast AND parasites? WHAT IF the parasites are unaffected by the antifungals, and when the antifungals are discontinued, the parasites expel the yeast they were hiding and it grows? OR, is there some other connection I am missing? How is it that some kids improve without gluten and casein - what is that connection to parasites? What would START the problem in a young child, previously normal but then regressing into autism?
Can Humaworm give me some advice about why my son seems to have "food allergies" to garlic, coconut, coffee, and black walnut (all foods parasites hate)? I have never seen him have any problems with these foods, but the ELISA test noted antibody response to these foods.
As a side note, the bad organisms in his gut were tested against natural antibacterial agents to see which ones could really make the bad organisms die off. Here were the results:
berberine - extremely high activity
caprylic acid - high activity
uva ursi - low
tannic acid - low
oregano - low
undecylenic acid - low
citrus seed extract - moderate activity
The doctor who performed the test did not recommend any of these products. The main interventions we are using are GFCF diet, 20 billion per capsule probiotics, vitamins, omega 3, milk thistle (he had high bilirubin and fecal occult blood), and phosphatidyl-serine (for the ADD).
The list of foods looks like he has impaired sulfur oxidation. Read Dr. Amy Yasko's autism information about different gene mutations. May need to avoid all sulfur and supplement with molybdenum as well as other things.
