I am almost done with my second day of fasting with store bought juices and wanted to ask from those more experienced: are store bought juices really that bad?
I have only used perishable juices like from Naked and Evolution. I am aware that they pasturize, so I have been sure to drink as much juice as I want (and plenty of water). Because I don't have a juicer, I plan to only go 3 days. Will experience any of the benefits of fasting in this way?
Depends on how long you intend to stay on the fast.
Due to monetary reasons I had to use store-bought juices for about half of my 28-day fast which is a long time, and in the end I have to say I started to experience scurvy-like symptoms - for example, my gums and teeth went sore and sensitive.
Pastourised juices often contain added Sugar which - should we be really strict - should not be a part of a juice fast. Also the juice is dead due to the pastourising - there's nothing living in it. The juice lacks everything you need to nourish your body, you're feeding yourself air, practically. You could end up deficient.
I just tried a free sample of store bought juice at a supermarket yesterday. I'm currently on day 8. It actually made my stomach feel a little quizzy. Later I made some fresh juice and it felt fine. There is a difference.
I would go with Somer's advice. There are some fruits with a lot of juice so you can juice with a blender and strainer. Watermelon is a very good example. It has very little pulp in it.
Well thank you all for all your input. I caved in on the 48th hour, I was really starting to feel like crap. I am rather thin to begin with, and eat very healthy, so I guess I didn't have the left over "junk" to get me through it! All I wanted to do was sleep for most of the second day. I am buying a high quality juicer within the next few weeks and will give it a go then. 2 days is now the longest I have gone, and I'm sure I can do 3 next time! :-) Thanks again!
I just wanted to give you all an update and share my experience. Last night, when I caved in, I had a thick white coating on my toungue and no matter how much water I drank my mouth would still feel dry. I shortly there after decided to eat, but now I realize I was majorly detoxing yesterday. I was sooooo tired and felt like crap. Today, I have eaten and I feel amazing! I have sooo much more energy than usual. I now realize I had hit a wall, and should have kept going :-/ . But I now know I will go longer when I get a real juicer. Thanks again for the previous posters' input.
A major rule of fasting is never to break during a crisis! Fast through until you are feeling well again.
Your weight is not a factor. Thin people can fast successfully -- ten days is a good goal though three or five will do you a lot of good. In any case, in the future if you go down, STAY down and drink drink drink! Flush out those toxins and you will come up feeling great! Sounds like you really need a good cleanse.
3-6 glasses of fresh juice, plus plenty of pure water is the rule. Be sure to keep your colon very clean using the colon cleansing ritual of your choice, every fasting day. I have often had a plain water enema stop a detox crisis in its tracks.
Any weight lost during fasting will return quickly post-fast on a good rebuilding diet.
