Yes, you are correct. Like you say, Candida does not eat the good guys, but crowds them out. in fact, I myself have never heard anyone say that candida eats the good guys. There are other things that kill/reduce the population of the good guys, like taking antibiotics, eating a refined/non-nutritious diet, etc. which then allows the candida room/opportunity to proliferate. Yes, you do want an acidic gut. This is different than having an overall alkaline body, which is also our goal. The gut must be acidic for proper digestion, and acid also kills candida (tho an overall acidic body will attract candida - so we are just talking about the gut here, but part of being properly alkalized overall IS having an acidic gut - hope that makes sense.) It is true that having candida is usually at least partially caused by having low stomach acid. I recently had a very interesting experience with HCL. I took it for a year or so back in the beginning of my candida journey about 4-5 years ago, and it helped immensely. Then, it got to the point where I no longer needed it (after taking it for a while, you supposedly begin producing enough of your own stomach acid, and you can tell because you get the burn, like heartburn, when you take hcl if you already have enough of your own), so I stopped it. Then just recently, like a couple of weeks ago, I noticed my digestion was not great, and so I tried the hcl again, and I did not get the burn this time, which means I needed it again so I started taking it with each meal and snack - and I needed a LOT of it to get to the burn point. I dropped my dosage a tad (so it was enough hcl to help, but was not too much to incite the burn reaction), and lo and behold, I got better digestion almost right away, and, and , and, die off! So, unknown to me, I had been developing candida in my gut due to low stomach acid again, and now back on the acid, am doing very well again.
This was a wonderful lesson to me on how we need to keep all the balls in the air at the same time. To be ever diligent, and as we continue our healing journey, it may not always be a good idea to close a door on a chapter we think we have overcome as given the right (bad) circumstances, it can re-appear. In other words, yeah, I may have had adequate stomach acid 2 years ago, but that doesn't mean I have adequate today. Another thing adding in the hcl seems to have done is to make my liver support supplements work better - which I guess makes sense because what can work if it is not properly digested? I am taking Liverite, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), NOW brand Detox formula, and sylimarin, and drinking lots of lemon water (and just recently my doc put me on L-Tyrosine to help brain function - after abou t2 weeks I notice a difference - muhc less brain fogged), and tho this stuff never seemed to help me in recent years, now that my stomach acid is up to snuff, they are working well and making my liver snap to attention, which in turn has made the candida go dissipate again. I will report back after a couple months and let you know if it continues to be helpful.
