I had my IUD removed on 10/15. I had mirena inserted after the birth of my second child on Jan. 2007. My life has been hell since. I weigh more than I did the day I delivered my son. I am tired all the time, I have horrible mood swings and depression, My fingers and ankles stay swollen and i stay bloated. The day after I had mirena removed, I felt so much better. The swelling in my fingers was going down and I didn't feel that hazy , exhausted feeling. Now, I feel like I am having rebound side effects all over again. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, when will it go away and is there anything I can do to help get my hormones balanced out?
Hi friend! I posted a page back about how some side effects came back on me recently. I want to stress that most of my worst side effects did go away after removal and have stayed away. I am referring to some very specific ones that came back all of a sudden and have caused me some debilitation. I am sorry to see you are going through reoccurance of your side effects. It may be helpful for you to look into estrogen dominance. On the previous page I have posted about this along with our good friend Kabel. The hormone in Mirena can really mess with our hormone balances and this would be worth checking into. My doc always reminds me that it takes at least six months for the body to recover after removal so we can definitely get some "pop up" side effects from this as well. You can get a saliva test done to check your estrogen/progesterone balances so you know if this is what you are dealing with. If you look up Dr. Lee or Dr. Lam they have some great info on this estrogen dominance as well and info on rebalancing your levels if they are out of sorts.
Please post back and do keep us updated as to how you are feeling. Take care friend! HUGS to you!!!!:)
Thanks for the reply. The main side effect that I have noticed that has come back is my fingers swelling up where I can't wear my rings. I have had some mood swings, but that is to be expected I'm sure. I am going to stay away from synthetic hormones for a few months and see how it goes. Do you know how long it takes before you can notice any weight loss after removal? I tried to lose weight while I had the IUD, but I could not lose a pound! Thanks again, I'll keep everyone updated.
Hi friend! I have read that many women have had weight gain as a side effect from Mirena. Since it can take the body quite a long time to recover from Mirena, I would give it at least six months. It is worth checking into the hormone levels, as an unbalance can continue to give us weight gain and prevent weight loss from happening. Cibolina posts some excellent info for you to look into as well. Hopefully, your body will recover quickly and restore the correct balance on its own. Take care friend and do keep us updated! HUGS!!!:)
I had my IUD removed 9/11 after having it for almost 1 year (a year of hell)...The worst of my problems was insomnia, which of course made me tired and moody/depressed along with gaining weight (in mostly in the abdomen), plus foot pain, and incredible hair loss (which I thought was just post-partum but much more extreme than with my first baby). My doctors too said it could not be the IUD even though it all started exactly 2 weeks after I had the Mirena put in. I started seeing a post-partum therapist (who thank heavens had not put me on antidepressants) and I started seeing a naturopath who thought I had adrenal fatigue. So for the last 8 months I had been treating for adrenal fatigue (which is one of the issues the Mirena causes) so I think I would have been in much worse shape if I had not been doing something to help my endocrine system...but I was not getting better to the surprise of therapist/naturopath (I had given up on western doctors)...I finally found this website and was elated to finally have an answer to my problems (and of course furious too)...Since having the mirena removed I've been continuing with natural medicine combining homeopathy and natural supplements (including bio-identical natural hormones treatment) and good diet to treat adrenal fatigue and cleanse the liver of toxins. It has made a world of difference in calming the nervous system and putting hormones back in order. I still am not 100%, but sooooooo much better. I can actually sleep in my own bed again. My naturopath says it takes 3-6 months if not a year to completely cure adrenal fatigue, but within a couple of weeks to a month you could be in working order and able to start gaining your adrenal reserve back. I wish you the best of luck! I hope we are able to get these terrible side effects at least listed in the manufacturer data if not removed from the market and make these idiot doctors take us seriously!!!
Thanks for posting your reply and update! I am so glad to see that you are doing so well! I am so glad you have continued on with the natural medicines and they have helped you feel better! Yeah!! My thoughts and prayers are with you friend for continued healing and a future filled with complete restoration of health! Take care! Big hug to you too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
I am still experieincing symtoms as well. Would you mind providing the name of your natrapath? I have just started a program by Dr. Barbara Hoffman. I am also having a saliva test and more blood work the end of this month. The most bothersome side effect has been the weight gain. I am active and a registered dietitian and nothing I do works, in fact, it makes it worse. I am so frustrated and tired of feeling "not myself".
My wife removed Mirena oktober 11, six week after insertion. The side effects were terrible (you can read my earlier post). She noticed the first improvement fourth day after removal. So far neurological test for MS was negative (lumbar puncture), we are still waiting for MR of head but I am sure that test will be negative to. She is much better but not OK. She is still very weak (tired) and sometimes during the day she has some of the previous side effect but less intensive. She is visiting doctor with alternative medicine degree and the doc is 100% sure that all her problems are due to hormone imbalance. She prescribed her vegetarian diet for at least 3 months to get her hormones in balance as soon as possible.
I suggest that we can keep replying to JESS message and provide after removal expirience to other users.
Hi Rudi, thanks for letting us know how things are going. I am so pleased that your wife is a bit better now and that you have found a doctor who knows what she is doing!! Of course, it is still early days yet, but it is very encouraging that she has a lessening of side effects. Please tell her we are thinking about her and hope that her health improves day by day:)
Thanks for your post friend! Sorry to hear that your wife is still suffering so much! I am definitely a believer that this Mirena can throw the hormones into unbalance. It is after all a progesterone that is released into the bloodstream in uncertain amounts and even Mirena cannot explain with certainty the metabolism rate of this hormone. If you read our friend Kabels most recent post she lists some excellent websites to look at that relate to hormone imbalances.
There is definitely a benefit to dietary intake helping with this imbalance(there is a previous reply by Kabel to the excessive estrogen post on previous page that refers to specific foods that help or hinder estrogen levels) I am glad to see you wife is seeing a specialist to help with this! PLease do keep us posted friend as to your wife's health. Crossing my fingers that the natural doc is able to help her get a balance again! Take care!:)
hi heater, how's it going? i got that saliva test arrive from USA - and it says to only test the saliva on day 19,20 or 21 of your cycle, if you have regular periods - i was wondering if the test you are having at the pharmacy is the same? did they give you a specific day when it would be best to be tested? If not, maybe it might be worth checking with them. I will wait till next month to do my test i think. The progesterone cream arrived at last - it had got lost in the post lol, typical:) i havent tried it yet as my numbness went away again, and i want to see if it comes back this month or not before i start treating myself with the cream. My hair is still falling a bit, but i would expect that to take months to sort out anyway, so am not too worried about that. I am continuing with liver cleansing herbs (good for my cholesterol anyway:) and continuing to keep up walking every day to get excericise and to lose some more weight, not only for my general health, but as they keep saying on the estrogen sites - fat people have higher estrogen levels, so that is the best incentive i have to get all these extra pounds off!!! A friend of mine who has had terrible hormone problems for years just got a blood clot in her lungs a few weeks ago, which stopped her breathing. We are very lucky she got to hospital in time and has survived. Blood clots can also be brought on by estrogen dominance and she has lots more symptoms besides....pretty scary stuff.
I do hope that are feeling alot better - which symptoms are your worst right now? Sooner or later, we WILL ALL come through this nightmare that is Mirena! But even when you are completely better, i hope you will still come back here because the support you give to people is so important for the forum - your unconditional love to people shines through your posts and makes such a difference:) big hugs:) Kabel xxx
Good to hear from you friend! I am glad you got your saliva test, YEAH!!! When I went to the pharmacy they gave me a take home saliva test and they did tell me to test on day 21. Nov. 5th is my day 21 so I wasn't very happy to have to wait any longer but the pharmacist assured me this would help with a more accurate test! I am so happy you finally got your cream! Can't believe the postal service lost it on you!!!!!!! Well the important thing is you have it now and it will hopefully help your body rebalance! Glad your numbness is better friend. I do hope this is gone for good. It sure seems like these side effects can be so stubborn. Sorry to see you are still having the hair loss too. I do hope this does start to get better for you. Have the headaches stayed away? How is your bleeding? It sounds like you are doing a lot to help your body out, with the herbs(so great they help with cholesterol:)) and the exercise. This can only help things I would think!!!! Please do continue to update us friend! I am so glad your friend was able to get to the hospital in time! How is she doing now? That must have been a terrifying ordeal! Will she be able to get some immediate help with the hormone balances to help prevent any further damage? Hope so much that she is better soon!
Thanks for asking how I am feeling! My worst symptoms right now are vertigo(though this has gotten much better), bloating, and another pop up one heart palpitations. I was diagnosed with an arythmia of all things. I have never had any heart problems and certainly not an arythmia so not sure if this is anything to worry about but of course am following up with the doc just in case. My body is sure out of sorts. I wanted to share something I found while on a web search for sudden bloating. I did not experience any weight gain on Mirena or afterwards but all of a sudden I experienced severe bloating in my middle and am definitely not pregnant and definitely not any cancer concerns. Before my last period I got bloated a bit like I always do and waited for it to subside after my period but it didn't. I think the following info is why I am experiencing this annoying side effect and thought I would share it with you and see what you think.

In addition, too much estrogen causes tissues around the abdominal area to retain water, or bloat. In younger women, this bloating is most noticeable around their menstrual cycle when their progesterone levels naturally drop to precipitate menstruation. As women age and their progesterone levels do not cycle back up during the month, then the resulting estrogen dominance causes the bloating to be a constant issue. This uncomfortable feeling is eliminated when progesterone balances the estrogen. Progesterone then acts as a natural diuretic, thereby reducing the bloating.
I thank you friend for your kindness! We will all indeed come through this nightmare Mirena experience and I sure hope its sooner and not later!:) I will always come here and try to give HUGS when they are needed and lend my support however I can! I care so much about everyone here and will always care what happens to you friend and all of our friends!!! When I read what you posted about my unconditional love I smile and think "right back at you friend":)! You are so awesome and I am so thankful for your incredible support not only to me but to everyone on here!Take care friend and truly hope you are well soon!!!! Big Hugs back to you!!!! Love Heater
hiya Heater:) Re the bloating - yes i agree, the estrogen dominance/lack of progesterone does cause bloating. I remember seeing it on some of the other estrogen websites etc too. It is amazing what our hormones get up to lol. I cant remember if you are already trying this but to help relieve the bloating while your hormones continue to try and adjust you could try the following - dandelion roasted root "coffee" - it isnt coffee of course, but looks like it. It will help to detoxify that liver and clear some estrogen and as well as stimulating the kidneys to work a little better and try to clear some of the excess water retention in the body. If you can find it, use the dandelion leaves too and even the fresh root, which can be steeped in hot water for a few minutes, then strained off. I am sure you are trying to drink lots of water too, which will help - 2 litres a day of water/herbal teas etc is about right.
The arrhythmia side effect is also brought on by ED Estrogen dominance, amongst other things, so it would seem pretty obvious that it is yet another long term consequence of the mirena use. In itself, irregular heartbeat need not be a problem for you as such, as long as you are careful in your diet and get those hormones sorted out, you need not have any problems caused by it - many people live with it and dont even know they have it till they go to the doc for some other problem and get checked over! However, it is important to avoid stimulants because they make the heart beat faster, as well as upping that damn estrogen again - so from now on, for your health's sake, no caffeine, no alcohol, and no Sugar except what is in your food naturally, like fruit for example. magnesium is needed for the muscles to wrok properly (and the heart is our main muscle), and is also reduced in estrogen dominant women...mmmmmm....i think we can see a connection here???:) Also Potassium is very important for the heart - guess what? Estrogen causes potassium loss, which in turn causes water retention - gotta love and admire the way our bodies are made, so complicated and yet so beautiful all woven together with everything effecting everything else - trouble is, when one thing goes out of kilter, so does everything else! Dandelion is rich in potassium and where normal diuretics will actually MAKE you deficient in potassium, the dandelion will help replenish stocks of potassium. If you get the hormones sorted though, then i am sure things will get a lot better all round. By the way the vertigo is probably caused by the magnesium and potassium levels being out - many people who are potassium deficient feel dizzy, confused and like they are going to fall. magnesium as i said before is needed by muscles, also by the nervous system as well as the hormones and can cause general muscle weakness if it is even slightly deficient. i remember getting the most awful cramps in my leg muscles when i was pregnant - i solved it by taking lead free dolomite every night - a mangnesium and calcium supplement.
Are your cholesterol and blood pressure levels normal at the moment?
just found some more info so will copy it here and post some other links too..the last 2 links give food ideas on potassium and magnesium - its probably best to eat more of those foods at the moment, rather than take supplements, as you are under the doctor. if you can get a blood test from the doc for your mineral levels too, so much the better, although i read that they are not always very accurate!! I do remember i had a few occassions since mirena of arrhythmia in the form of heart palpitations for a few seconds - i would hear my heart beating hard and i just stopped what i was doing and was very still till it stopped - i think i held my breath which probably was a silly thing to do lol, as i probably needed the oxygen from breathing hehe. i had the same while the doc was trying me out on statins too - but since i stopped the statins, i have had no more problems on that front, although i remember my mum had an irregular heart beat, but the doc was never worried about it, and never gave her any treatment for it.
As for me, yes thanks, the bleeding stopped - i had a long heavy period and am now waiting for the next one to see what happens! oh the excitement, i can hardly contain myself hehe..apart from my hair still coming out, i am feeling ok - a bit apprehensive due to the doctor appointment i have next month, when she will want to put me on cholesterol drugs, which i dont really want to take, as they will mess with my body chemistry at a time when i am trying to get things back into balance again - still, with my luck lol, they will probably give me side effects too...oh well, we will have to see:) Thanks for asking about my friend with the blood clot, she is out of danger but is feeling pretty bad generally and has put on so much weight with her hormones etc that it is difficult even for her to walk too much right now, but she has a wonderful hubby who is helping to get her up and going:) It will be a long haul for her, but i am very hopeful, especially if she can get to grips with the Estrogen Dominance stuff, that she will be able to lead a long, happy and healthy life:)
Anyway, before my computer crashes again, i will post some info and those links here for you - i already just did all this and the comp crashed before i had a chance to send the message to the forum (not for the first time, did that happen either lol). poor old comp is about as healthy as me LOL.. take care:)xx
Progesterone prevents estrogen dominance (Estrogen dominance is a condition where the toxic effects of estrogen are not countered by progesterone.)
Estrogen dominance alters cell function to allow the influx of water and sodium into cells, while potassium and magnesium are lost from cells, causing water retention and high blood pressure.
Estrogen dominance reduces the amount of oxygen present in the cells.
Estrogen dominance interferes with thyroid hormone.
Thyroid is the hormone that regulates metabolic rate. Low thyroid tends to cause low energy level, cold intolerance, and weight gain.
Estrogen dominance promotes histamine release (which causes allergy-type symptoms).
Estrogen dominance promotes blood clotting thus increases the risk of stroke and embolism.
Estrogen dominance causes copper retention and zinc loss in blood and brain. Copper and zinc are important cofactors for brain enzymes and the low zinc level leads to exaggerated stress reactions, serious mood swings, and depression.
Estrogen dominance increases the likelihood of fibrocystic breasts, uterine fibroids, uterine (endometrial) cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colo-rectal cancer due to estrogen's cell proliferation function. Progesterone neutralizes this effect by differentiating cells.

Give it some time. Its only been couple weeks, your body needs a chance to balance itself. I had mine out in the beginning of Sept. It took few weeks, but the aches & MOOODINESS!! are gone! I had my first period around 9/30/07, and it wasnt bad at all. Very heavy for couple days, but no cramping or body aches, was quite normal actually. I cant EVEN BEGIN to tell you how much better I feel today. My poor body (or I should say immune system) was fighting this thing hard, I know it now. I feel like I have my life back. I have already written before on here about what was happening to me and the shock of figuring out that it might be from the mirena. NOW I know it was. Everyday is better now, I feel like I won this war LOL!! No more foreign objects in this body ever again! And I am not saying that the mirena wont work for some people, if anyone out there is lovin this thing, hey, have at it and thats all good for you. However, for me, I am all set. I am happy now, there is life after MIRENA! LOL!! Take care.........be well :)
I haven't been on here for ages because the curezone Webmaster said I didn't exist....well my username and email address anyway. Strange considering I was still receiving alert emails to the same email address. All fixed now, so all is well!
It makes me so happy to come on here and see that some people are finally getting past the side effects from mirena. Then it makes me sad to see the people still suffering. I completely understand, as I am still having effects too. In the first week after removal (12 Sept) I started to feel better really quickly, after the bleeding stopped. My skin cleared up really quickly, my stomach went back to being almost flat again, and I genuinely felt happier than I had in a long time.
How time changes things.....although I haven't had any abdominal pain I am more bloated than I ever was on mirena, I have not been able to lose any of the 40lbs I gained while on mirena, my skin is alot worse than it was on mirena, and I still have dizzy spells, joint aches, severe headaches, fatigue, bleeding gums, mood swings and depression. My fingernails are finally starting to strengthen again though.
I am going to my doctor tomorrow so I can continue on my anti-depressants, and I think I will ask for a test to check my hormone balance. I'm sure she will try to give me drugs, which I don't want (bad enough having to take anti-depressants) and I'm sure she'll tell me I need more exercise (being a single working mother to a 5 year old boy, and running a household keeps me going non-stop as it is) and I'm sure she'll blame my weight on what I'm eating (I have a healthier diet than most people I know). I think I will give her a link to this forum...
As for my periods, well....after bleeding lightly for a couple of days just after the positive pregnancy test, I have not bled again since. I'm a little surprised, because my periods were always on a short cycle 21-23 days. I'm already on day 26 with no sign of it whatsoever!
Having mirena put in was one of the worst things I have done in my entire life. It has caused way too many problems for me. I know you're right Kabel, we will all get past this....I just wish it would happen quickly.
hi apple blossom, so good to hear from you again, i was wondering what had happened but had hoped it was a good sign, in that you were feeling better and busy with the new job etc and that you hadnt had a chance to post - I am so sorry to read that that is not the case, and that in fact you are still having lots of problems. it is definately a good idea to get your hormone levels tested to see exactly where they are at the moment.Heater researched this, and found that saliva tests are more reliable than blood tests, so if you can arrange for a saliva test to be done, you will get a more accurate and up to the minute result. I ordered a saliva test from America, so i didnt have to get my doctor involved - the saliva lasts quite a while in the test tube, which is good because UK post is so bad lol.
In view of the lateness of your period, have you done another pregnancy test yet just in case? Even if you are not pregnant, the fact that you WERE pregnant even for a short time, would have started all your hormones off again, and i know from what other friends have said, who have had miscarriages, that it can take ages for their hormones to settle - when you think what you have been through, just with Mirena, let alone being pregnant, and all the other stress, it is not surprising that your hormones don't know whether they are coming or going.
I do so hope that things settle down for you soon.
Are you still on your progesterone cream? or have you stopped that since the question of pregnancy? and are you taking anything else, apart from the anti-depressants? Going caffeine and Sugar free should help some of the side effects including the depression. Check your creams and body lotions too, for preservatives like the Parabens group which are xenoestrogens and raise the bad form of estrogen in the body, which will only contribute to all those effects. LOL - i had ordered a proper bio identical progesterone cream, but while i was waiting for it to arrive, i bought a normal wild yam cream at the local health store, even though they are not supposed to do much, i thought it would be better than nothing - then i saw it was less than useless because it had 3 different types of Parabens in it, so i just threw it away, along with most of my cosmetics and other face and body creams! The proper bio identical cream has arrived now, which contains the USP version of progesterone as reccommended by Dr. Lee and does not contain parabens:) Of course you always have to have some kind of preservative in commercial creams, but parabens seem to be one of the worst ones!
How are you managing to cope at your new job with your headaches and dizziness etc? Are they understanding there? hope so!
I hope also that your kittens are continuing to give you joy and that your little boy is having fun with them too:) Hoping to hear back from you soon and in the meantime, thinking of you. love, Kabel xx
I had my Mirena IUD in for 12 days and that is all I could handle. I must start with the fact that I have a fibroid the size of a mini Watermelon and that is why I tried the Mirena as the estrogen in the Pill was just feeding my fibroid. Anyways, the pain and discomfort in my uterus never went away or subsided, after 3 days my abdomen was bloated, day 5 my hair starting falling out and my breasts felt like they were going to explode. Oh and according to my husband I was emotional! My doctor took it out and was happy I came it to have it removed because the IUD was bent. Apparently my fibroid was not interested in making room for the IUD and my doctor said the discomfort would never have gone away. Going back to the doctor after just 12 days was hard for me because I honestly felt I wasn't giving it a fair chance, but am I ever glad I listened to my body. Women are bad for not listening to their bodies and I am usually pretty bad about it. Not this time though, I knew something wasn't right. I had it removed on Friday and it is now Monday and I am still bloated and my breasts are killing me.When will the side effects go away???
Hi, so sorry to hear about your ordeal! Glad you listened to your body though. Often times the longer it's in, the longer the side effects last. If you'd like some more feedback, I'd suggest posting a new thread since this one is 6 years old and deeply buried.
This Post was such a blessing to find, especially reading all the responces. I had my Mirena IUD since the birth of my daughter in June 2007. So just last year I got the new one put in because theyre only good for 5 years. My symptoms on Mirena were no periods, heavy weight gain the plateaued at the same number no matter what, swelling in tummy (I looked pregnant and weighed as much as I did at full term pregnancy), insomnia, excessive eating (never felt full), swelling of fingers, extreme fatigue, hair loss, depression, overall numbness (food lacked taste, medicines didnt work as well, ect.) I finally decided I was going to take it out to see if it would help with weight loss. It's only been two days and it feels like a fog has been lifted. Im getting full easy, I finally slept through the night, I didnt need a nap through tje day, my pain medication that usually does nothing for me actually knocked me on my butt and made me sick because it was too strong all the sudden. They put me back on the pill, but it still helped tremendously being off the IUD. I'm really looking forward to seeing the further improvements as more time goes by. I wish I would have seen these posts sooner. Thank you for sharing!
