It may sound too good to be true, but simple apple cider vinegar can be just as effective as the pricier over-the-counter remedies available to treat athlete`s foot. Soak a cotton ball in the vinegar and apply it to the foot twice a day, paying special attention to getting the vinegar between the toes. Let it dry thoroughly before putting on socks and shoes. This potent antibacterial solution also possesses antifungal properties, thanks to the acetic acid in the apple cider vinegar. Make sure to wash your hands THOROUGHLY to avoid spreading the infection. Sore throat pain? If you´ve got a scratchy, irritated sore throat, try mixing 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (you be the judge of what you can tolerate) and mix into a 6 ounce glass of tepid water. Q. I have heard that apple cider vinegar soaks can be used to treat athlete's foot. Would this work for toenail fungus?
A. Any kind of vinegar in a ratio of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts warm water can be used. The acidity discourages growth of fungus on the feet. Soak your tootsies for about 15 to 30 minutes daily. Because toenail fungus is deeply embedded in the nail it may take several months to see improvement.
Other home remedies for nail fungus include coating the nail with tea tree oil or Vicks VapoRub. If such remedies fail, ask your doctor about Penlac (ciclopirox), a new prescription product that can be painted on the nail to treat fungus.
