My daughter called this morning and told me she had discoverd a tampon that had been left in for 3 weeks! She said she had not been feeling well for the past couple of weeks, but nothing major. There was of course some odor upon removal. I've never known anyone who has experienced this, so just wondered what if anything she should do?

She needs to have removed ASAP as this can cause a deadly staphylococcus infection call toxic shock.
If she wants to, she can take three full caps of oregano oil three times a day. This helped me with a mild staph infection.
I'm posting a link to info about TSS (toxic shock syndrome). To my knowledge this is the only potential problem. If she didn't get this then she will be fine without doing anything other than removing the tampon. The vagina will clean itself out though it's own processes, although a douche may speed up the process. I had something similar happen with a sponge years ago. It was very smelly, but most of the odor went with the sponge itself and it cleared up very fast once I got it out.
This happened to me/ just last night..in desperation, I rushed to the net this morning..to get information on this. I found you! Please advise what happened with your daughter..the scent was very bad. yes. about three weeks..I thought I was pregnant, for I was menstrating very lightly, and it had been over 10 days...my husband DID ejaculate inside, and then the next morning..I must have placed a tampon in...now..it has been left until 3 weeks later, (last night) and I am horrified! what if I concieved behind all of this!!!
I'm SO glad someone else posted about this - I've been scared out of my mind - and trying to get an appt. with an OB/GYN - for a long while now. After doing searches here on my symptoms - a watery brown discharge that only appears when my body is "excited" or I'm sexually active - I found info on "lost" tampons. I REALLY didn't think it could be possible & even asked my ex-bf if he could "feel" a tampon/foreign body inside me and he said no. Just to be on the safe side I did some self-checking tonight & there WAS an absolutely disgusting tampon lodged way up there that turned out to be the source of the brown fluid. I will call Planned Parenthood tomorrow & see if they feel I need further care but I am so relieved (yet horrified!) - I was imagining all kinds of terrible scenarios. The awful part is that I have absolutely NO idea how long the tampon was stuck there - I've had other tampons in since and have had intercourse. Thank you to the posters who gave me the idea to check!!!
How strange, as I am in exactly the same situation! I had a really foul smelling discharge for days, which was often brown coloured. I was really embarassed by the smell and getting a bit worried about it. I looked for a tampon, but didn't find one... until today!
When I took it out it absolutely stank- it had obviously started to rot. I searched to see if there were any health problems associated, but haven't found any. I was aware of TSS, but have felt well, so I don't consider that to be a possibility.
OMG the same thing happened to me!! About 5 days ago I had a tampon in and my husband and I had intercourse. I forgot all about the tampon. Then about 3 days ago I started having this brownish foul smelling discharge!! I thought I had cancer or something. It was so nasty! So I took a shower because I coudlnt stand the smell any longer and found out I had a tampon still inside of me. It was pushed way up there. It had such a foul stench to it. Now I am worried about TSS. I called my gyno and he said not to worry unless I have a fever of 102. I havent felt good the past couple of days so I am worried now.
I just returned from the doctors office for this same problem. I did not know the tampon was in there. Not even sure how long it was in there!
I was having cramping, sweats, discharge with a brown tinge, and a horrible odor. The nurse practitioner prescribed doxycycline for infection. This is the second time that this has happened. The last time was two years ago. I keep track of my usage of tampons and do not know how this can happen again!
Makes you want to give up the tampons! They usually fall out, not up!
This will make all of you feel better! I was on a sailing trip in the South Pacific and the same thing happenned to me. Smell, brown discharge, I was scared because we were miles from civilization. Three days later we landed in the Kingdom of Tonga (not sure that is civilization!) and they had a hospital of sorts. My husband accompanied me and they found nothing but I really think it had finally fallen out after checking for it everyday. Talk about embarrassing! Tin roof hospital with concrete block walls and all the nurses giggling about this silly American women who lost her tampon. Now I am back home and my husband is still on the boat and the head (bathroom) is down. Bet when he takes it apart it is that damn tampon. Glad I am not there!
I'm so glad these boards helped me realize I have a lost tampon up there! Please just GO TO A WALK-IN CLINIC and they'll remove it for you in no time! Don't stress and agonize over it in the shower or bathroom and get all grossed out and crying. It's like doing a pep test except you won't feel a thing and won't see the nasty tampon. Save yourself the emotional trauma. 10 minutes and it's done. Save yourself the dignity. Get a female doctor if you can. Apparently they see this all the time so no judgement at all. Also, not a family doctor so no need to worry about the receptionist looking at you funny next time you visit.
I was freaking out for a few day with this brown discharge and after much googling finally figured I'll check again. As I have already checked around in the shower a few days ago and didn't find anything. Even though my husband told me he felt something hard in there during sex. Well, I really dig into it this time and found the tampon.
I had a pap smear done yesterday and my GP removed a tampon that I did not know was there and it must have there for about 2 weeks... My partner started to complain of a foul smell after sex and so I started to get worried. Now that the source of the small was discovered im very much relieved! I know have thrush which I guess is a way of my body trying to clean itself and I have taken thrush medication and applying cream. I'm sure in a few days everything will be crack to normal!
so lately I've been spotting a little bit so I decided to put a tampon in and not really bleeding so I didn't even think about it it was a little hard to pee but just kept well a day or so later me and my husband had sex and I noticed a very foul odor which I never normally have was a little concerned that I thought well I have been spotting a lot lately I'll just take a shower and clean really good and then this morning me and my husband had sex again the same odor was there but it was getting worse my husband says somethings not right honey so I decided to douche with some warm water it seemed when I squatted in the shower it was a little hard to push up so that I stuck my finger up there and felt something very spongy I know my cervix wasn't that low so I tried to move it around and then I pulled it and it started to come down will it end up being a tampon the smell was god awful but I got it out and I cleaned up I have been feeling bad lately but no fever and I'm wondering if I should go to the doctor or if it should be okay I'm thinking it may have been in there anywhere up to 2 to 3 weeks
